We are ALL unwell!

The household came down with a nasty virus about two weeks ago (suspecting Covid but not testing) which is ongoing, first my partner, then me, then my DD shortly followed by our eldest cat.

Eldest has a pattern of being run down when we are, (also happened our first lot of Covid in 2019) where he will be lethargic, mild vomiting and just generally off his food. He’s usually fine within a few days and just feeling sorry for himself. He’s just been sleeping it off on our bed this week and a little grumpy. Was sick once the other day but seems much brighter now.

However, we also have two 1 year old Kitty twins who now seems to be displaying the same behaviour, reduced appetite, some loose stools, going in their tray more than usual and sleeping more. One of the twins in particular seems more affected and will not touch her breakfast today so of course that’s worried me. An episode of vomit too this morning but only a small amount and I put this down to skipping her meal. She’s been very sleepy and unbothered by much today, however she was playing and running about last night.

I asked for some advice off the vets whether to be seen or just monitor over the weekend and they said it’s best to bring her in just in case it’s something else, however they do not have their next app until Monday.

Can I ask whether anyone has experienced their cats also being run down when the household has picked up bugs/a virus? I cannot see this being a coincidence as the vet suggested it being something else, but I haven’t really come across much to read up on that this is common

Yes. When I pick up a stomach bug it seems the cat then develops one a few days later

Thanks @narwhalsarereal
We are supposed to be going away tonight until Sunday, my mum usually looks after them all for us but now I’m scared to leave them in case they get worse. I don’t want to cancel the trip over them having just a virus which they will recover from with rest either so I’m torn.

I have just checked on the youngest who seems most affected today, she’s just snuggled herself under the covers with the eldest in one of the kids rooms bless her

My kitten had these symptoms and he needed the vet - do they not do emergency appointments?

Personally I wouldn't go away and leave my cats if they were sick, especially if the vet recommended they come in to be checked.

So we have now contacted our elder cats vets to see if they had any sooner appointments. They advised that they do find cats can contract illnesses off us and it’s normal for them to be quiet and off for a few days, no appetite, sickness etc and said the same - to monitor see how she goes if she didn’t pick up by tomorrow then bring her in. They had one for tomorrow so we have booked that in for her, they have said that we can cancel the app if she appears brighter and starts eating.

I feel a bit more reassured now!

We and staying home for the evening to watch her and see how she is in the morning.

We strongly suspect the cat caught covid from us back in 2021. We’d tested as you did back then and he started sneezing, he doesn’t go out either so couldn’t have caught it from elsewhere. He was fine though and made a full recovery.

@TropicalTrama the vets had mentioned on the phone research shows cats can contract Covid from us. It’s such a shame for them! This is the first time the kitty twins have been poorly so they are probably wondering what is going on. Charlotte is purring at the side of me now and looks a little pinker in the nose, but still not eating and is very quiet. No sniffling though!

Poor things! Hope they make a strong recovery. Our vet said the same re Covid so definitely sounds likely.

I'm glad you've got an appointment. My kitten had exactly these symptoms last weekend though neither of us were unwell. He needed a few injections and a week of antibiotics and it took about three days for him to really get back to normal.

It's a week since he got sick and he's back to his usual chaotic self now Grin
