Tips on removing a matted spot

My grouchy ginger boy cat who is a bit chunky has developed a matted spot on his back. I don't think he can reach to groom.
I do brush him but this spot seemed sore so I left it although I could not see a scratch I wonder if it clotted and then left a mat.
I just assumed he would groom it out.
Anyway now it is about the size of a ten pence.
I have tried clippers but he is terrified of the noise and I don't want to hurt him.
I know I could take him to a groomer but honestly he would be so scared I just wondered if there are any other gentle ways to tease it out or remove. There is only this on little patch the rest of him I can brush daily.
Thank you

Can you tease it apart with your fingers?
I have little round edged grooming scissors that I have used to help get matts out

No it's stuck so tightly, however you have reminded me of those little round ended scissors I think I may have some in a nail kit!
Thank you

Round ended scissors, like you'd use for cutting a baby's nails, and cut off some of the matt, a little at a time, leaving time for it to loosen in-between.

Brilliant he let me do about 5mm and then I stopped so as not to scare him. He's a funny boy so lovely but easily scared.

I have some round ended long scissors which I think are meant for animal grooming. Got them from Amazon.

Our Dcat is long haired and gets poo nuggets stuck and we have mastered the art of the scoop and snip. Dcat hates it so swift and slick is the key and it’s definitely a 2 person job.

My lovely boy has long hair and gets matts. I took him to the vet nurse and she clippered them off

We have clippers but the terror if we turn them on near him! He would have to be sedated at the vet I reckon.
It doesn't seem to be hurting him so I will keep trying gently with the snipping but will take him if I can't get them.
