Cat fur rubbed off around collar area

Hello,

My cat's fur has rubbed off all around the area where her collar is. The only reason I can find for this online seems to be over-tightness but this definitely isn't the case as it's loose. Is there any solution to this? I really don't want her to be collarless, but it also can't be good for it to be rubbing her fur off.

Any advice, please?

Have you applied flea treatment there recently?

Crzy · 18/09/2023 12:15

The collar isn’t velvety or anything by any chance is it or even leather? Anything that’s not those cheap easily slides around neck material or very padded seems to irritate both my cat and my dogs skin and leave fur missing. You’ve just reminded me to order dcat a new collar as he lost his yesterday so stuck a velvety spare one on him forgetting this is the effect!

I am no cat expert but when similar happened with my dog, it was an early sign of hypothyroidism. He then went on to lose fur from his tail and then his belly and then (to a lesser extent) all over.

Just thought I'd mention it, in case it helps?

Don’t use a collar? Have your cat microchipped (if she isn’t already).

Could be an allergy, diet, irritation from the collar, flea medicine, hypothyroidism.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check with my vet the next time we visit.
The collar is very soft leather, which I thought would be a good choice. Any suggestions about a good type of collar to try? Ideally, I'd like one I can have my phone number added to without having something dangling down as she's averse to anything touching her - that fact that she'll wear a collar is a miracle!

Much to my dismay as I really hate the look and feel of them this type of material is the only one that seems to not irritate mine they do embroidered ones too to remove change of metal irritating https://www.amazon.co.uk/TagME-Collars-Release-Personalised-Reflective/dp/B09697HN74/ref=mp_s_a_1_30?crid=1RU32C9KRFFN1&keywords=cat+collar+with+address+slot&qid=1695038999&sprefix=cat+collar+with+address+slot%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-30

You can get hypoallergenic breakaway collars with no hanging down bits other than a removeable bell my vet suggested but they trigger dcat somehow too! I get why you want one on her ours earnt his after appearing 3x as a “stray” in our local fb group when he’s just a six dinner Sid who likes to make himself comfortable Grin

She is microchipped but, if lost, someone is more likely to call a phone number right in front of them than make a trip to a vet to check for a microchip.
Thanks for the recommendation, @Crzy

If you really insist on putting a collar on her, it really should be a quick-release one so that she doesn't get it caught on something and strangle herself trying to get free.

But really, collars aren't very safe for cats and I don't really believe they should wear them.

Clarich007 · 18/09/2023 20:16

I don't like collars on cats at all, heard too many horror stories of injuries caused by them.

Callipygion · 18/09/2023 21:15

My cat has too, I think all cats I’ve had have as well. They aren’t too tight, there’s loads of room & they are quick release safety ones.

I’ve always had jet black cats so I like them to have a reflective collar.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 19/09/2023 22:09

Every cat I've had with a collar has lost fur under it. Vet says it's harmless as long as the skin is healthy.

flyingant · 20/09/2023 13:32

Thanks for the responses. She does only wear quick release collars and they pop off quite easily. I've ordered the ones @Crzy recommended so will see if it improves. The collar is off in the meantime to try to give that area some time to recover.
