Kitten limping - vets immediately?

Gorgeous 15 week old kittens here, been home with us for a couple of weeks and settled in really well. I noticed that one had started limping when walking yesterday, although she is still happy to run around at top speed with her sibling, jump on and off furniture and play with toys. She’s eating and drinking and toileting normally too. She also lets me pick her up and touch all limbs and feet without crying or pulling away.

I’m not sure if I’m being an overprotective new cat mother to want to rush her to vets tomorrow! If she’s strained it dangling from the curtains or sliding on the floor will it heal by itself?

Saying thanks with a picture!

For 'just' a limp I've always left it to the next morning, as long as generally mobile and no visible wound, no behavioural changes etc.

Cat litter stuck between a pad?

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 17/09/2023 19:15

I think she’s probably ok and has just strained it. See how it is in a couple of days Our kitten broken it’s legs (got run over) and it was obvious there was a serious injury

Papergirl1968 · 17/09/2023 19:17

I was about to say she's probably just landed awkwardly jumping off the sofa or whatever. I'd just keep an eye on her for a couple of days and see how it goes before heading to the vet.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2023 19:19

Oh thanks for the suggestion, I’ll take a look.

That’s reassuring, she seems happy in herself and pretty mobile so will see how she gets on for a couple of days.

Oh poor kitten. Thanks for the advice!

Indoor or outdoor cat? If outdoor then vet foret thing tomorrow.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2023 19:22

Thanks! It’s tough when they can’t talk to tell me what’s wrong 😀

One of our foster kittens broke a leg once by being an idiot, and he certainly wasn't bouncing around as normal afterwards. He went unusually quiet and hunched up, with staring fur.

I think 'acting normal with a limp' probably only warrants keeping an eye for the moment.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2023 19:24

Indoor, so just been doing lots of house exploring.

Just keep an eye then. It's just it's easy to miss a bite if an outdoor cat.

viques · 17/09/2023 19:26

She is lovely. Please take her collar off though, my boy nearly lost his leg because he put one foot through and it ripped the skin under his arm pit. His loving owners then dumped him. In the shelter it took six months and several operations to heal, the huge scar is still bald and very sensitive.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 17/09/2023 19:37

As a dc I found my dcat hanging from a tree in a cemetery. Alive - just hanging by her elasticated collar. Bin it op. Seriously..

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2023 19:41

I wondered whether her sister had bitten her (I now understand the term ‘cat-fight’!) but I can’t find a wound.

Thanks for the collar tips, they don’t actually have them on anymore (pic was from last week) but I had intended to get them new ones. Will reconsider!

Bites are designed to close over fast and heal but get nasty underneath and cause an abscess. I missed a bite on my cats paw and the vet only found it when he rubbed his leg to check for a break and suddenly it started bleeding. Wouldn't have found it otherwise. He needed antibiotics, seemed normal otherwise.

WildFeathers · 17/09/2023 20:25

I agree with the no collar - my relative is a vet and they can get into serious trouble with a collar. Microchipping is a good idea to do though.
If kitten is still limping in the morning, I would personally get them checked out just to be sure. Cats very successfully mask pain so important painful issues can be missed. Hopefully will be sorted by the morning.

They look totally gorgeous!

Get the quick release ones with the little clip and check that they pull apart before you use them. Never elasticated ones.

One of mine loved getting out of windows, once he skidded down a sloped roof and damaged a claw. Could it be something like that (claw not roof)?

GuppytheCat · 18/09/2023 13:21

How's the little menace today?
