Weeing just outside litter tray

Hello!

I have a pair of cats that will be 3 in December Over the last 3 months one or maybe both (it’s hard to tell) are urinating at the edge of their litter tray onto the floor? Maybe hanging their bum over or maybe just urinating on the floor next to the litter box. One or both also seem to urinate in the sink at times… again this is new. Both have been vet checked and are fine.

Background - they have always shared a litter tray since being kittens (it’s a large one) we have had 3 trays previously until they were 1, however 2 were never used. Happy to trial another litter box again. Anyone have any ideas what’s going on or how we can fix this. They are also indoor cats (happy to consider outdoors if people feel this is an issue)

My thought is to try multiple litter trays again but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas? I love them so they’re not going anyway but could do with not mopping up urine most mornings.

I believe the rule is 1 tray per cat plus 1 spare.

Also try changing the litter type as well. My two are really fussy and will wee outside the tray if I don't use the 'right' litter.

Good luck!

That's a sign that they are uncomfortable in the tray. Perhaps it is too small?

And I second the suggestion of adding more trays

Get a high-sided litter tray like this one

Or two or three!

Indoor cats especially in groups will be aware of the scent of others and as they age this might become more of an issue, so more litter trays in different places away from their food and water may help. But with a high-side one they at least can't hang their bums over the edge unless they really want to.

What litter are you using? Manufacturers seem to change things constantly and if something small has changed, or a scent has been added, the cats may suddenly hate it. I use pine pellets, absorbs odour, not much to change!

More litter trays, and bigger ones.

Something about the litter box is uncomfortable. Have you checked with the vet about potential infection.
They may need a second box, or changing the litter and sterilizing the box more frequently.

I scoop twice a day and sterilize once a month but add more litter every ten days. I have just one tiny cat.

More bigger trays, some have covers on but not all cats like the covers.

My cat old cat did this, he was old and didnt realise he was not in all the way🙄 so his bum was basically hanging over the edge. I got a large storage box, and put the lid under the tray so when he went for a wee if any was not in the tray, it just went on the lid instead of on the floor. Tried him with a few higher sided boxes, but he had arthritis and struggled to get in them.

What are you cleaning with ? If t's too strong or not to their liking they might try and overcome the smell ,,,,,, by peeing on it !

We have two adults , a jumbo covered tray ( that Female uses) and a huge open tray (Its an underbed storage tray ) and Cats Best litter

Unfortunately one peed on the floor last week , I sprayed it with a Urine Neutraliser and they've taken offence and peed more .
I think the female has used the males tray -he always buries pooh , she always leaves it on top of the litter There was an uncovered pooh in his tray . One of them is gaslighting me Shock

Carpet shampoooed (twice) its not shifted the smell . they haven't gone back to pee there again ( I had to shift their trays to shampoo) .

If it continues you need to think about urine infection , Vet visit would be next step .

Huge underbed tray is the Males tray

Thanks for all the comments 🙏 really appreciate it. It’s definitely only one cat. Caught her in the act. I think she just hangs her bum out.
To answer questions I use cat san non clumping litter - (though vary this nowadays as it’s gone up in cost) maybe I will just stick with buying it.
I clean the tray with zoflora and give it a good rinse.
Weirdly I haven’t noticed the weeing so much since I posted. Only once. (Previously it has been multiple times a day)

Thankyou to whoever posted the link for a deeper logger tray. I have ordered one. I also wondered about a top entry litter tray as if it’s accidental surely that should stop it!??

Try puppy pads on the floor, they don't look too bad and protect the floor well.
