Kitten not eating

So, our 5mo kitten has decided to go on hunger strike. He's been picking at his food since yesterday lunchtime and hasn't touched anything since about 2pm, even Dreamies.

He's been to the vets and they checked his stomach etc. and couldn't find anything. His temperature is normal. They gave him an up to date wormer and a steroid injection about five hours ago but he's only eaten about two tiny kitten biscuits since we got back.

He just sniffs his food and walks away. We've tried different flavours, different brands, different bowls and locations, warming it up etc. but he's not remotely interested.

Does anyone have any advice? Vet just said to keep an eye on him and bring him back in if he's still not eaten tomorrow night. He's toileting and drinking okay.

Photo for tax!

Our older cats are eating absolutely fine if that has any relevance!

Thanks! He was really brave at the vet and exploring everywhere - so he's not remotely lethargic and didn't show any sign of pain really 🙈

He's fast asleep now in his little cat tree which is how he normally spends his afternoons!

He is so beautiful

Try some tinned tuna in spring water? It's the only thing boy cat will eat when he's under the weather

Girl cat isn't fussed over tuna strangely enough

He's had little bit of lik-e-lix that I put on his paws to encourage him to eat. He appears a bit brighter so hopefully he'll get his appetite back soon.

What a beautiful cat!

I had a similar situation with one of my cats a few months back.

She had all the injections your cat had and then a week's worth of antibiotics and three days worth of something else.

That did the trick, was really scary at the time as she was pooping blood.

Hope your cat makes a full recovery.
Xx

Oh gosh - I'm glad she's okay! His poop is normal thankfully.

He has a week of antibiotics to take home with him - can I ask how long it took for yours to start eating again? The vet it could be until tomorrow after the stress of two vet trips, multiple injections and being sick etc.

My cat started feeling better about 3 days after taking the antibiotics and was eating normally again.

When my cat first got sick the only thing she would have is those Licky Lick things which I found were good in keeping her hydrated as she wasnt even drinking water.

I hope your cat makes a full recovery xx

Thanks @chrissybutter - he's still not eating on his own but I've put lick-e-lix on his paws which he's licked off and kept down.

I'm hoping he feels hungry tomorrow.

Aww bless him!
It is so worrying when they get sick, did the vet say what they think is wrong with him?

Hopefully he will be back to his old self in a few days.

They didn't really seem to have any idea which isn't great.

They seem to be treating it as a bug/infection - we have other cats though and they're absolutely fine (all indoors) so I have no idea.

He's been playing fine this afternoon and drinking but he just won't touch his food.

So adorable!

When our kitten had a gastro bug she went off her food completely, was generally not herself.
Like you she had vet visits and injections galore, and honestly two days later she was right as rain.

We offered her fresh chicken chunks and left her usual food out, the combination of everything settled her down.
Touch wood your beautiful fur baby is feeling better soon ❤️

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 16/09/2023 20:16

Thanks @loopylou76 🥰

He's absolutely fine in himself apart from the not eating.

Stupid question! Could it be a girl in heat? I know dogs can go off their food when there is a bitch in season.
(He is old enough to be neutered isn’t he?)

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 16/09/2023 20:25

He's not neutered yet - he's booked in for next month.

I'm not sure if it could be that - there are loads of cats around though!

He's just eaten! Some fresh roast chicken of course 😂

Fabulous news

Kittensat36 · 16/09/2023 23:28

Let's talk about my week.

My two weren't eating much in the hot weather, but they were drinking. I threw away so much food because it say there a while and the flies had their go. I was pretty sure they must be eating elsewhere, but my neighbours said no.

The younger ate more when the weather broke, but the older was still picky and not eating much. Litter tray clear of squishy stuff. Not sick. She wouldn't even eat the ham I give them to keep their faces out of my dinner.

Thursday Morning she was looking a bit bleh!! but keen to get out. She needed worming, and I was hoping the tabs would arrive before I took her to the vet, but bowed to the inevitable and arranged to be off Friday to get her to the vet.

Get home Thursday night and both food bowls are empty. She ate her dinner and then took my fingerprints off taking the hammy. There was no glaze on the plates!!

I still have to beef them up a bit, though before the RSPCA turn up. They do feel very thin. They are on the lower end of "a fine boi" category. They will never get to "oh lawd, she comin'" stage.

Hang in there, yet man might get stuck in yet.

Excellent news!
Glad he is OK, our pets are so precious!

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 17/09/2023 07:08

He's still not right but I think he's better than he was. He's had a few mouthfuls of his normal food and a tiny bit of roast chicken. I also put lik-e-lix on his paws so he'd have to lick it off.

I guess offering food little and often is the way to go!

Beamur · 17/09/2023 07:31

One of mine was poorly recently. Not really eating, bit lethargic. Had similar from vets - anti sickness, AB's, steroids, picked up over maybe 3 days? Back to normal naughty self by about day 6 of the tablets.. I found a few dabs of lick-e-lix on the food made it more appetising.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 17/09/2023 07:38

Thanks @Beamur - that's reassuring.

He's absolutely fine in himself - drinking and toileting so I'm not too concerned now he's on medication and has seen a vet.

Did you just try feeding at normal times and see how he went? He's had something to eat this morning (not much but better than nothing) so I guess I'll just keep trying!

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 17/09/2023 12:22

So I've just been out to get some tuna - he was very interested and has just eaten a reasonably healthy portion.

The relief is immense!

OP posts:
andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 17/09/2023 14:57

Just another update - he is doing much better.

He had a lick-e-lix for lunch and a tiny bit of tuna (plus the water). Two hours later he appeared next to me trying to steal my cheese Hmm

I gave him some more tuna and he wolfed it down, licked his lips and asked for more! I'm sticking to small portions for today as I don't want him to eat too quick and make himself sick, but so far it's looking good!
