When should adopted cat visit vet

Hi, any advice on when I should take my cat to visit the vet for the first time.

He is an older cat. 8 years old. I adopted him a few days ago. I would like to take him to the vet for a general check up and nail trim but don't want to rush it. He is friendly and not hiding but I can tell he is nervous.

When did you first take your rescue cats to the vet and how did it go?

Beautiful 😍

It depends how you adopted him. Cats Protection and some rescues won't let a cat go until its been vet checked, fleas and wormed, and had vaccinations. Has he had all those?

However you will need a vet consult to get a prescription for flea tablets anyway, so maybe get him booked in for a months time if nothing is worrying you.

Bless him, he's adorable!

As he shouldn't go out for a few weeks until he knows it's his new home, no urgency for anything except getting him insured and registering him at the vet.

Otherwise it depends really on a few factors. If he came from a rescue centre, they should have had him vet checked before putting him up for re-homing, made sure his jabs and wormers etc are up to date, micro-chipped him, neutered if necessary.etc. In that case don't worry about taking him in until you need flea & worm treatment (most vets won't prescribe without weighing the cat themselves). The rescue should have given you all the paperwork so you have dates when things are due.

If he has come via any other route, you need to check any paperwork to see what has/hasn't been done e.g. does he have an up to date vaccination card, has he been chipped and registered. Then get him to the vet once he's settled in properly and preferably before he goes out for the first time. so he can have a proper MoT and vaccinations started if his aren't up to date.

Good luck with your gorgeous orange stripy bundle of love!

Sorry, no advice (I'm generally Team Dog rather than Team Cat) but have to say he is gorgeous 😍!

Thank you both for the replies. I will wait until he is settled.

He came from Cats Protection so he has been checked by their vet and had vaccinations and anything else he needed. They were good to him.

He is on pain relief because he had a sore hip so am keep to talk to my vet about it but there is no rush to do so. And I will probably sign up for their monthly plan so he will need to be weighed.

Will definitely wait until he is settled. Thank you 😊

Aww he's gorgeous and looks so relaxed.
Our last cat was literally dragged in off the streets, he was living, near a 4 lane double dual carriageway, so bit of an emergency really.
He hadn't been neutered chipped or anything. We got him one Thursday and Monday morning he was at the vets for neutering chipping etc.
We did this because we knew nothing about him so it was urgent really, plus the spraying of an un neutered Tom cat is horrendous
Good luck with your boy

Thank you Clarich you did a wonderful thing taking in your last cat. I hope he settled in well. Definitely no rush to get my boy to the vet.

Enjoy your boy.I love ginger cats

I'm fostering to adopt hopefully on Monday. As she's not been in the rescue, she's going to the vet the same day as she comes home as need to rule out any bugs or infections.

Gingeri · 15/09/2023 11:09

Good luck Toddlertea I hope it goes well. I don't know how I will get my dc in the carrier when I eventually take him. He will be scared.

All mine are taken to the vet within 48 hours of coming home.

Gingeri · 15/09/2023 18:28

andrain is that so they get used to going? Or because you want your vet to check them?

It's really to make sure they're fit and healthy and to check whether there's anything we need to do.

That makes sense.
