Rosie's Farm, lump of plastic

I have read about this many times, people find plastic in pet food, and in hundreds of years it never happened to me, until today.

It was always a bit of the tag from the cow's ear when I read about it, but this was the chicken stew which is chicken rather than a mix of stuff.

A first time for everything and a good thing I mash it up for her, she is such a dustbin she would have swallowed it otherwise.

Forgot to get a photo.

Are you going to continue buying it or change to another food?

I have Rosies Farm for my newly adopted cat. He seems to really enjoy the chicken one. I have been mashing it for him and have not seen any hard bits. After I bought it I saw in reviews saying there can be hard bits.

I have ordered a trail pack from untamed which will be delivered today.

trial pack not trail

sadaboutmycat · 13/09/2023 15:13

You've been feeding your animals for hundreds of years?!

MonumentalLentil · 13/09/2023 22:43

@sadaboutmycat yes, I am very old (feels like it these days).

I have some others to work through before I make another order so will continue for a while. I am almost at the end of the Rosie's Farm which she really seems to like, it was the last chunky chicken stew one, so she is now on chicken & turkey, will see what the situation is when it runs out.

She has Feringa and Macs (I find Macs is very solid and needs work to hack it out of the tin and mash it up so was going to give that a miss when it's gone), she also has Yarrah chunks in gravy (organic). I have bought all the grain free, sugar free, high meat content foods over the years and now have a shortlist of ones that she likes. She eats anything actually but some are easier for me to weigh out as she is on a diet so I buy according to package size as well as how solid the food is.

She also has Thrive, loves the fish ones.

I buy in bulk from Zooplus mostly, sometimes add something on offer to the weekly shop but always grain free, sugar free and high meat content as she is a porky little thing and overfed before I adopted her, been on a diet for almost a year.

My cat is also on a diet. He put on weight at his foster home. I am hoping we get in a good routine with food and stick to it. I won't buy any more Rosies farm as don't want to find anything unexpected in it. He enjoyed his first tin of untamed today so hopefully that works out ok.

Gingeri · 15/09/2023 18:30

The untamed does not fill him up so I might have to order more Rosie's Farm because he really likes it and it fills him up.

MonumentalLentil · 16/09/2023 21:14

@Gingeri There are other options if he likes the pate, although you may need to order from Zooplus to find them.
Suggestions of filling pate type foods:
Macs
Wild Freedom
Animonda Carny
Feringa
Just a few of the best ones. Feringa is less dense. Wild Freedom is the most solid.
Shredded chicken/fish ones like Blink are good, and filling. You can get single ones to try. Also Meowing Heads.

I wouldn't buy Natures Menu any more as it has changed and my greedy cat wasn't keen, it used to be a soft texture and good quality but not it is a solid grey lump.
Applaws in tins has no taurine and is not complete. Ditto Encore which is made by the same company. I am not a fan of either for reasons I won't go into here.

One point, an important one, the quantity in the tin/pouch. Untamed is 75g I think, so if you feed a couple of those per day it won't be enough. Most single serves are 85g or 100g. Thrive is 75g also.

I feed around 175g - 200g per day for weight loss but I do have a small cat. That means one tray of Rosie's Farm and one pouch or tin of something that is 75g or 85g for ease. I feed no dry at all as it is high carb.

Just remembered Scrumbles, might suit him.

Hi MonumentalLentil thank you very much for all the information on food it really helps me. I was not sure what to try next and don't want to waste alot of money trying different foods. I will try a few of the ones you have suggested from zooplus.

You are correct saying the 75g tins are too small. I think I will try feeding him in the same way as your cat with one Rosies Farm or similar and one other tin.

Thank you

@Gingeri just one more point, there is a guide on Zooplus for the amount to feed. Also reducing the amount needs doing very slowly (might be possible to lose weight by stopping dry if you feed it, and add a bit more wet to get to the recommended amount). They say that listings have a guide on them.

A year on and I still have a heavy and small cat. I bought baby scales but need better ones as they are useless. Vet gave me a weight to aim for but she still feels heavy.

It is best to ask the vet about weight and weight loss. Mine looks almost cat shaped when she stands straight but when she runs ahead of me she looks like a rugby ball on legs. When I adopted her she was rounded, when she arrived she was obviously skinny, can see it in the photos on the rescue site. She was overfed in order to gain weight, not I have to get it off her again.

Here is a guide of how they should look:

Do not underfeed by a lot as he could get hepatic lipidosis, must be done slowly.

If he is a big cat, not just fat, he may just need more excercise. I try to provide playtime for at least 20 mins. but she hasn't much knowledge of toys and now she is settled in she is a lazy little lump.

Thank you MonumentalLentil for the very useful info. I will check out the feeding guide. I definitely haven't reduced his food too much. He is still getting a little dry food because always pestering me for food. So I can understand how the foster carer fed him too much. Though it is disappointing that it happened.

It is maybe my wishful thinking but I thought he looked slimmer today. He looked like the overweight picture when he arrived and maybe a bit slimmer now but still a little heavy round the middle. He loves playing with toys, he can be very active a few times a day and a lot during the night.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing with your cat and feeding a good diet. It is good that our cats enjoy their food. My previous cat was so fussy, it is lovely seeing an empty bowel. I never had that before.

I will definitely get advice from the vet. When I feel brave enough to attempt getting him in the carrier.
