New bathroom to be installed - do I put cat in cattery during the work ?

We'll be having a new bathroom installed in a couple of months' time- this will be a fair bit of noise and disruption as it means taking out the old bath, installing a walk in shower, moving the location of loo and basin, getting rid of old tiles. Suggested duration is 2 weeks of work.

During this time, I'm wondering whether it's better to put my cat in a cattery (out of harm's way) or whether he'd cope at home. He is a 2 yr old male, very nosy and he has form for coming up to workmen / builders and getting close to their tools - as he's always interested in anything new. I think my worry is that either he'll lick / touch something he shouldn't - or else, that the noise and disruption will be so bad that he'll push off and not come home.

Has anyone else had a new bathroom or kitchen installed, where you have a nosy active cat - what did you do ?

Also, cat tax. Dormant inside a packing box.

Can you not lock the cat in a different room while the tradesmen are working?

Ask the installers what will be the most noisy and disruptive time. Usually it’s demolition.

mine hung around and supervised the installation and didn’t get in the way too much. I was there watching though.

It depends on the cat. Ours HATES anywhere foreign, and would hate it more with other cats etc.

I agree, can you move kitty litter and food/water bowls to another room or two that can be sectioned off?

Thanks Aaron. We could shut him in the living room (with cat litter box in there etc ) though I still think in this case the noise might be scary for him

If he's just friendly I wouldn't bother. We had a passive aggressive cat who would retaliate if we had visitors or any work done by strategically shitting as a punishment. Now she would have been straight in the car.

I should also say, we have used the cattery before and they are excellent - they give each cat lots of attention. So although he wails while being driven there, he seems fine while actually there.

We’ve had new bathroom and later new kitchen with cats. All fine. They were inquisitive of work but nervous of builders, they pushed off out of the way during the day (outdoor cats) and came back at food time in the evening. As long as their food and sleeping places are relatively stable, they’ll be fine.
(Cattery wasn’t an option as kitchen took 6 months with extension etc… in fact cats were the reason WE didn’t move out while it was done!)

I’d do it to avoid stress. A good cattery isn’t that bad for them. Lots to look at, revenge to plot for when they get home.

I had building works done recently (for about a week) and was worried about my cat. She found it noisy and upsetting and would disappear during the day, but then she spent each evening and night with me recovering. I think she would have found a cattery much more stressful.

I just had some work done on my bathroom which was a lot of noise and drilling but one was nervous so hid all day and came out as they went and other one didn't care. They were both fine really

Thanks all for comments ! Especially liked the one about cat plotting revenge...

I put mine I when I had my kitchen done. For better for all of us. They'd have hated the disruption and being confined to one room.

We had a new bathroom when DC was about 6 months old. It was where her litter tray and food were. We relocated her to another room with plenty of space where she was secure and away from building works. It gave her a love of the other location and an obsession with dust sheets!

My DH is a retired bathroom installer, they’ve done lots of bathrooms with cats, they are usually no problem, but it’s mainly only an issue if the cat is not allowed outside, as they are in and out of the house lots of times during the days. When my DS worked with my DH, he was often found with cat on his lap when he was supposed to be working. They are noisy and like to see whats going on, my DH always saw it as a nice distraction. It will only be loud noise the first day or two whilst they take out bath and tiles etc., after that the noise should be bearable for your cat.

We've just had noisy work with builders in and out.
My main concern was cat getting under floorboards or into our attic space /bedroom.
We shut our cat out side during the time the men were there.
He is also very very chatty and has similar markings to yours .
