Is there anything that gets the smell of cat wee out of carpets?

We had this before with an elderly cat and ended up getting rid of the carpet in the end, but that was an old carpet I hated and this one is quite new, so I am willing to try a bit harder here!

I have sprayed the corner with 50/50 white vinegar/water in a spray bottle which didn’t seem to do anything. I didn’t saturate it though, it was just a spray so maybe that needs to be done again?? Do you pour it on?

I have now covered the area with bicarbonate of soda and was going to leave it for a few hours before hoovering, I actually think it smells worse now though-I can smell really strong ammonia 🫣. Or is that it working?

Any other tips? What about a vanish type carpet spray?

Help!

You can buy special spray from pet shops for exactly this purpose.

Put quite simply no. It will have seeped through the carpets into your floorboards. You need to have the carpets up, throw them out, sand and bleach your floorboards and then replace the carpets if you wish.

All is not lost. There is an enzyme spray you can buy which helps. Plus then the whole baking soda thing. I would also try a professional clean if that doesn't work.

In my experience the enzyme spray plus the baking soda generally works. But.

They often go back to a spot and repeat offend. And you have to get on the puddle quick before it soaks in.

No you can't no solutions will ever take away the pee smell of a cat. They will mask it for a short while but those not living in the house will smell pee straight away coming in

Simple Solution - the extra strong stuff. Spray it on, leave it for 15 minutes, pat dry. Then repeat.

I’m going to give that a try and hope of the best, thank you! Which one have you used? The spray or the bottle?

1001 carpet foam, I think you can get a pets one.

Oh my gosh, I feel your pain. This is what I have recently done, which has worked:

  1. Pat area with kitchen towel to remove as much wee as poss (gross and probs futile)
  2. Take up that corner of carpet and do above with underlay and then repeat for floor underneath
  3. Use spray in pic above as per instructions
  4. Prop carpet and underlay up to dry using old plastic bottles, putting kitchen paper inside the layers to soak
  5. Take out all props and paper etc, replace carpet to original position
  6. Hire industrial carpet cleaner from local hire place (50 ish quid) and give it a thorough going over using double the strength of washing fluid

It does seem to have cleared the smell now. Good luck! Horrible business, esp if you can’t afford new flooring like me.

I've used bio washing powder dissolved in luke warm water, apply it and keep it wet overnight (to let the enzymes work). It's very effective. It's the same principle as the sprays, just much cheaper.

We had this after our elderly cat developed issues. My advice is don't use a carpet steam cleaner! It seemed to life the smell and it was horrific! We ended up with new carpets as we couldn't get rid of it whatever we tried.

We use the spray but I'm sure either would be fine!

MoorlandWanderer · 12/09/2023 20:28

Just to be clear, the one I used wasn’t a steam cleaner - it was like a wash hoover thing.

edit: I thought I had quoted the message this replies to but seem to have failed!

None work.

I find this very good -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Beckmann-Stain-Odour-Remover/dp/B08CJ6J3BP

We lost our elderly cat when he was 20+ and he spent his last months incontinent (he was still in good form otherwise, not in pain, loving his life with us and eating like a horse) which was painful for our living room carpet!!

The one we have though you can use bleach on and that seemed to work ok - but you can't use it on all carpets!!

I'd probably have preferred the Dr Beckman's but hadn't tried it then.

MonumentalLentil · 12/09/2023 20:48

I had an incontinent cat, sometimes it was more than a dribble and although he was persuaded to stay on the washable floor it didn't always work.

I bought the large container of Simple Solution, and the spray bottle and just topped the spray bottle up. The large one is usually advertised for dogs but is the same. So is the one sold for floors.

I would soak up the pee with kitchen roll, then drench it in Simple Solution. Right through, and leave it to dry. I also used it in the carpet cleaner, mixed with water and a little bit of carpet shampoo when I cleaned the carpet.
