Fussy cat's wet food has been discontinued!

Gourmet Gold Melting Hearts. It's a mousse with a gravy centre. Lots of upset owners online, especially ones with elderly cats with no or few teeth and can't chew. TempCat is just fussy and will go without rather than try something else. (He does eat dry biscuits so he won't starve).

I've just spent ages searching online and found some from a hopefully-not-dodgy online store, of just one flavour, so bought as much as I could in one go. But once that's gone I'm not sure what we'll do.

It took me ages and quite a lot of trial and error to find something he'd happily eat. He'd gone off the food his previous people fed him and a lot was wasted whilst I tried other foods from cheap to outrageously expensive subscriptions. He is very, very suspicious of anything new, dislikes anything lumpy, doesn't even like Cat Soups or Lick-e-Lix. The nearest mousse-like alternative (Revelations) he is sporadic about and even pate types mixed with extra water he can turn his nose up at.

I feel sorry for him as he likes his wet dinners. And sorry for myself as it gets expensive buying new brands then chucking uneaten food away. I know - first world problem etc. Moan over......

Oh dear poor puss, I live in fear of this as I too have a very fussy cat. I have many many boxes of food with 1 or 2 sachets gone in my cupboard. She only likes felix doubly delicious fish, the only place close to me that sells it is heron, I dread the day it disappears. Tbh I can't afford to endlessly buy different foods on the off chance, wish they sold single sachets so I wasn't wasting £5+ each gamble.

Howlettjon · 20/11/2023 19:26

One of our fluffs will only eat 2 flavours of felix so we order from direct.purina.co.uk as you can pick your own flavours. They have 2 from the doubly delicious fish range you can buy. If you work gor the nhs you also get 25% off.

I shop for Cat stuff at Zooplus. They do very good offers, free P&P over £39 order and they have a savings programme - 3% off. My little one likes the Doubly Delicious but I buy the meat varieties for her. But they offer the fish ones. I find with Zooplus that if the item is out of stock and I log my email - I normally hear that it is back in stock within the week.

Applaws do a mousse - it’s only a complementary food though, & it lacks the gravy. It’s such a nightmare though, isn’t it? Webbox are offering a mousse now too apparently, which IS complete; & Pets At Home have their own brand plus offer a “topper” by Seriously Good. Fish4Dogs also offer a couple of cat mousses.

Sorry if all those have been tried & rejected already - I really hope you can find something.

Defiantlynot41 · 20/11/2023 19:55

We had this with a childhood cat, went on hunger strike when her preferred flavour of food changed formulation.

Have you tried this? Same manufacturer, mousse plus melting topper, comes in 3 flavours, my two like it,

TemporaryCatSlave · 21/11/2023 21:33

@Defiantlynot41 Yes he will, somewhat reluctantly, eat that one. We are still working through his old favourite (as I bought 96 tins!) mixing it 50/50 with his less preferred versions.

Also @TheBalletCats thanks for those suggestions. I haven't bought any yet but definitely going to give them a try.

It's not cheap finding a new option. He does eat some Gourmet Perle pouches but unless I mash it up he tends to lick the gravy & leave the lumpy bits! ! If I give him anything he doesn't like he just leaves it. I still have some Katkin pouches in the freezer as I need to find a cat owner with a hoover cat to donate them too. Otherwise I'll be feeding the local foxes at some point. Such a princess and the pea!

You are very welcome. I hope you can find something that meets with his approval!

I wonder if he’d take to things if they’d been blended? If you’ve a cheap hand blender (I can see not wanting to prepare the cat’s food in your smoothie maker, for example) it might be worth a try?

CremeEggSupremacy · 22/11/2023 23:12

Lilys Kitchen does a pâté food, could he manage that?

AutumnNamechange · 22/11/2023 23:26

Blink have just started doing a pate. They do a trial pack for £1 so not too much of a waste if he doesn’t like it..

primocat1 · 24/11/2023 13:29

I just phoned Purina and moaned at them. Apparently the Gourmet Gold team decided to discontinue the melting heart due to economic reasons. They’ve made a new more expensive revelations mousse, and I think they want to push that.

The customer service woman did say that my comments would be passed onto the Gourmet team. She also mentioned that a lot of other people have contacted them too to moan. Perhaps if more people phoned and moaned, the team might revisit their decision?

She did offer me free sample Fortiflora though, and said that it might help transition my cat onto another food.

Not sure what I can get that she will eat. She has vaguely licked other foods, and has been losing weight. Yesterday I gave her a tin of the gourmet gold melting heart that I have left and she ate it up, but I am really upset that Purina pulled it suddenly with no warning, so that I didn’t even get the opportunity to buy up some beforehand.

If anyone has got any pointers as to where might have some to buy, I would be grateful.

TemporaryCatSlave · 24/11/2023 14:26

@CremeEggSupremacy & @AutumnNamechange Thanks, I have tried pate's including Lily's kitchen but he turned his nose up , even when I mashed it up with extra water. I'll give the Blink one a try if I can't find an alternative mousse he likes.

@TheBalletCats Yes, I'm seriously considering blending cat food! I can't believe these blighters drive us to such ridiculous things, talk about suckers.

@primocat1 Have you tried Ebay? Someone appears to be selling some of the salmon flavour if you can get it. (I'm not buying it, Rex will just have to suck it up and eat the alternatives, or eat dry food only, his choice). I will moan but as you say doubt it will make a difference.

You could try this:

https://www.webbox.co.uk/webbox-naturals-cat-mousse-multipack?gadsource=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInPDP9OzcggMV14xQBh18-wXBEAQYASABEgJh6fDD_BwE

My cats are extremely fussy and like the fish flavours but not the Turkey

OwlBasket · 24/11/2023 15:18

maybe blend, add extra water and use one of those milk frothing sticks to mousse-ify it? Huge faff though.

OwlBasket · 24/11/2023 15:19

TheBalletCats · 24/11/2023 22:34

I like that @OwlBasket has gone a step beyond my mere blending 😁 I was wondering if blensieving (as it sounds - blended, then shoved through a sieve: [carers for adult] humans not allowed solid food may be familiar with it) might work better than “just” blending but am obviously rank amateur 😂

TemporaryCatSlave · 24/11/2023 22:57

OK, I confess I've been googling black friday deals on blender/sieve gadgets. This is what life with cats leads to....

With one of my previous cats he couldn't eat grains. We honestly spent a huge amount of time during lockdowns cooking him fresh chicken and vegetables then kind of mashing it up every day. The things we do for these little beasts.

TidalShore · 25/11/2023 13:35

Aldi and Lidl both do mousse tins. 40-something pence each and sold singularly - so not a big expense to try.

primocat1 · 25/11/2023 19:03

i got a whole lot of doubly delicious from Amazon last time they had Amazon Prime day. I waited until the last day, and got it for really good price. Way cheaper per kg than anywhere else. They tend to do these deals on their special prime day sales, like this Black Friday weekend, so if you have some room to store it, it’s an excellent time to grab some.

primocat1 · 25/11/2023 19:05

I do the same, but from Bitiba.co.uk, which is a sister company. I find they usually are cheaper than Zooplus, and I prefer their reward scheme to Zooplus’s one.

primocat1 · 25/11/2023 19:08

Thanks, Morrisons currently have it super reduced price until 28/11/23, so I’m buying some and will try it. Feels like a bit of a gamble buying so much, so my delivery comes tomorrow and if it’s a hit, I’ll quickly bulk buy some more.

AliceIvy · 29/11/2023 13:14

Sadly I had this issue my boy titch wouldn't eat anything but melting hearts he just about maybe eat a couple flavors of pates, but he doesn't seem to mind the revelations mixed with the patties but even then that's a personal go back to his biscuits we seem to be having some luck though with lily's kitchen and blend mixing them with the patees but again I do have to blend even the patties and mooses out so that he doesn't see a difference I found the revelations with licky licks cat yoghurts where a good call as well

primocat1 · 30/11/2023 02:03

I’ve just tried mine with the gourmet revelations. It’s gone well with the salmon, chicken and tuna. I’ve warmed them on the radiator, or just on me until they reach body temp. I’m just quite peeved, because I suspect that they are very similar (if not the same) as the melting hearts, but 2/3 the size (57g as opposed to 85g) and twice the price. It does feel like we are being fleeced by Purina.

TanyaLasagna · 09/12/2023 12:28

Hi,
I am having the same problem!
My 11 yo will only eat the melting heart. I'm so furious that they discontinued it but still sell it in Spain and Italy! You can get it delivered to the UK if you're willing to pay extortionate shipping prices!
She won't eat any of the other mousses or pates. I've tried buying gravy and adding it to a pate.
I did the same as you and bought up as much as I could when it was still available. I only have salmon flavour left 😭
Amazon sell it, again you're willing to sell your house to pay for it.
Please let me know if you find anywhere that does it.
