I don't think cats smell - do you?

Not a TAAT - (but triggered by another thread.)
I don't believe I'm nose blind. I have just deeply sniffed all four of the Grumpy cats 😹 and I don't believe they smell of anything.

Please note I'm not daft -

  • Yes, cat pee and crap smells,
  • Yes, a litter tray does smell just after a cat has just been in, (but then again, so do human toilets)
  • And yes, if a cat is peeing where it shouldn't in the house then that is likely to smell really bad.

But whereas I can almost always tell if a dog lives in a house (due to doggy body odour permeating soft fabrics etc.), I can't smell cats in other people's houses.
So I maintain that a healthy cat, in itself, does not smell
Am I right?

Cat food also stinks

hartof · 28/08/2023 14:06

My cat smells lovely. Dogs stink, when we visit in laws with a dog the house stinks you feel like you can smell it on yourself when you leave

Merapi · 28/08/2023 14:07

Entire tom cats whiff, but that's nature - they are supposed to, and it is one of the reasons that we neuter them. You do also sometimes find that elderly cats start to smell a bit odd when their kidneys begin to give out.

Other than that, no. Cats don't smell.
one of mine has cheesy feet

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 28/08/2023 14:16

All four of my cats smell gorgeous and each a little different but it's something between a fresh meadow and honeysuckle! I love smelling them. Dogs on the other hand always smell vile to me. I've never met a dog or been in a dog dwelling house that doesn't stink!

RadishAndTwiglet · 28/08/2023 14:18

Cats themselves do not smell. Litter trays and cat piss on carpets and furniture smells terrible.

JamSandle · 28/08/2023 14:19

Cats smell lovely!

AgnesX · 28/08/2023 14:21

Their surroundings can get very catty if not kept clean eg blankets and beds etc. They do have their own smell if damp but nothing like dogs.

TGGreen · 28/08/2023 14:22

If you have a cat, someone who doesn't knows as soon as they walk through the door. It's your choice whether you believe or care if it smells.

Pumpkindoodles · 28/08/2023 14:25

Cats definitely smell, just not as strong as dogs
but if they wee (or poo) in the house it reeks.
If there’s a litter box, even a fairly clean one, or their food is out, you can smell all of that in the air too.
I’ve been in some houses and it’s a bit eye watering, I feel like I can taste it in the back of my throat.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 14:26

Cheddar doesn't smell. But her breath isn't the sweetest. She had a dental
In February though.

juneybean · 28/08/2023 14:26

My Persian doesn't smell aside from a carpetty smell (only way to describe it)

But her potty can stink, we use silicone litter and use the baby powder smelling tray stuff, pick up poos as soon as they occur but there can definitely be a pissy smell after a few days!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/08/2023 14:27

Cats don’t smell unless a litter tray or spraying. Dog houses you can always smell. And small rodent ones but that’s to do with the bedding I think.

My cat smells delicious. I love sniffing her. She smells like warm cuddles lol

Post of the day. 😀

CwmYoy · 28/08/2023 14:35

Cats stink. They really do. Far worse than dogs. Although they stink as well.

Houses with pets in are unpleasant to be in.

lemondust000 · 28/08/2023 14:39

Not at all

Iamacatslave · 28/08/2023 14:40

My cat smells divine.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2023 14:48

Cats themselves don't usually smell unpleasant.

However, any house that has a litter tray smells, even if it's cleaned regularly. The owners almost certainly don't notice, but visitors will.

Theforeverhome · 28/08/2023 14:50

I have 4 cats and know that I am noseblind to my house as it smells when I return home after a few days away, however, I can’t say for definite what is the cause of the smell. My previous house did not smell this way, but I often think it smells like the house of a friend who had 3 cats so I’m assuming it is something to do with my cats.

I don’t think mine have peed on the carpets but they have been shampooed. The cat food sachets are now in an airtight bin instead of the normal kitchen bin. One main difference is the sofa has fixed seat covers instead of removable ones but they are Febreezed weekly. It’s disconcerting knowing there is a smell but not being able to smell it to do anything about it since after 24 hours my nose becomes accustomed to it again and I don’t go away that often.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 28/08/2023 14:55

I think its a nose blind thing. Cats have a smell which makes me gag, even in the cleanest of houses. I have dogs, so I'm sure non dog people feel the same in my (clean) home.

KnittedCardi · 28/08/2023 14:56

Arthur smells of lavender and cat mint because he spends most days sleeping in them. Lovely.

I do wash his bowls after every feed though, because they DO smell. He has his own food room though too, the utility, so it doesn't permeate the house.

You have clearly never smelled a wet dog.

Our cat smelt "warm" with cheesy wotsit paws (those were rank) ...but every now and then she smelt of old lady hand cream 🤔

That’s because she was being fed by Gladys down the road Smile

Saschka · 28/08/2023 15:13

I think what I normally smell in cat owners’ houses is wet catfood - it really does reek, and permeates the whole house. That and pee from the litter box.

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter to me whether it is the cat itself or the cat paraphernalia that stinks. The fact is cat owners’ houses have a smell. Not as bad as a doggy house, I’ll grant you that, but it is a definite smell that hits you when you walk in.

ShadyCat · 28/08/2023 15:21

Mine doesn't smell
Windows open all day, no wet cat food left about, tray scooped immediately and binned in the outside bin, cat regularly brushed, blankets washed often, cat dried off if he's wet...

I opened the door one day to the police and the first words out of her mouth were "your house smells amazing" before she even introduced herself GrinBlush

My cats smell lovely 🥰
