Kitten of 8 months not responding to his name

Is this common? Dad is 4 years old and listend to his name but son doesn’t. I’ve also noticed that at times he will just lie in the way (say in front of a door or hallway) and not move. He’s not skittish at all. He hears his food bowl being filled from upstairs so it’s not the hearing itself 😆

We have tried treats, extensive 1:1s but nothing seems to make a difference. Any advice?

Can you ask them to tidy their toys away and put the washing on?

😅

We can call our cats, in the same room as us - and they totally ignore us! We only have to get the Dreamies out, and suddenly their hearing is restored!

Cats respond to their name, as and when they feel like it! Often, they don't feel like it! I have spent 7 years, trying to train one of mine not to go on the dining room table, when we are eating.....in vain! (Her brother learnt in 2 years)!

My cats know their names and come like lightning when I call them.

Every time they come I give them a treat to reinforce this and I train them by saying their name, waiting for their attention then giving a treat.

I did this because they are indoor cats and I wanted to be able to call them back if they ever escape.

My cats are ragdolls which are famous for being on the more doglike end of the cat spectrum. They are fairly easy to train to do other stuff too.
Get Out means leave the room
Get Down means get off the kitchen counter.
If I tap the table they will jump up onto it.

Obviously this training is nothing compared to the training they have done on me 😆

You haven’t made a sufficient offering to your cat overlord. He will give you attention when you please him.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/08/2023 12:57

Mine know their names purely to make the point of ignoring it. The youngish male twitches an ear when his name is called to hear if it's followed by the sound of the dreamies tin being opened. If not, he's not interested.

HeidiInTheBigCity · 16/08/2023 14:18

He's a cat, he needs to be fed, taken to the vet when not well, and showered in cuddles and affection.

There is, literally, no benefit to to them being especially skilled - and I'm saying this as someone who has taught a cat tricks before. Utterly useless, but he found it entertaining and I found it cute).

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 16/08/2023 14:54

He's a cat - he'll respond when he wants to, not when you demand Grin

My kitten responds to his name, the middle one does if there's food involves (otherwise he ignores me completely) and the oldest will respond if he can be bothered to get up.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/08/2023 15:27

My cat answers to her name. She definitely knows it. My late pair were variable!

WickWood · 16/08/2023 18:56

Sounds like my 10 month old boy! He also lies on the stairs, in doorways etc with not a single care, he won't move while you step over him, he doesn't care. He just flops on his back, there couldn't be a more laid back cat!

The sensible 2 year old girl (who is a rescue so I can't take any credit for, though i have changed her name) knows her name and comes to call every single time, food or no food.

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2023 20:55

When mine were kittens and thought playing outside was more fun than coming home, I used to get my neighbour to round them up with her gundog.

Worked surprisingly well.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/08/2023 21:18

Cheddar escaped a few years ago. But answered when I called her by name. So
Manger to track get down by talking to her!

Georgina125 · 16/08/2023 22:06

One of my cats ignores her name completely but will appear if food is opened. My other cat usually won't respond to his name but occasionally forgets and will look up when you say his name. You can almost see him thinking "damn!" when it happens.

Welcome to cats. 🐈‍⬛

Rename him, or give him the nickname of Dreamies - always works with mine, who has extremely selective hearing when it comes to her actual name.
Just rustling the packet works too.

LadyBird1973 · 18/08/2023 12:10

Mine know their name but when one escaped the garden and got into next door's, the only thing that got her back was me putting squirts cream on the patio - little bugger ignored everything else!
