Allergy advice…

My friend is allergic to my cats and the normal supermarket own-brand stuff that I use for hay fever doesn’t seem to do much… it’s so bad they can’t stay in my house for more than a couple of hours.

Any suggestions? What really works?

Some people swear by using petal cleanse on their cats, but if some one is really allergic nothing may help.

Darker · 16/08/2023 08:49

That’s a bit difficult depressing… surely someone has a recommendation?

Allergies usually get worse with each exposure. Sometimes you can get used to your own cat over time.

Sometimes you don’t.

Antihistimines, nasal sprays, if your friend has tried these & they aren't working maybe more comfortable for your friend to meet you elsewhere.

You could also try giving your cats a supplement like this https://www.purina.co.uk/brands/pro-plan/cat/liveclear

Neither my brother in law nor my best friend can come to my house because of my cats.

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2023 09:17

Your friend can try Fexofenadine.

I had a friend who was highly allergic and swore by Petalcleanse.

But honestly if it were me I'd just be avoiding cats as my existing allergies make me ill enough.

I’ve just bought some petal cleanse and air cleanse. I want them to be able to spend time here!

My mum is allergic and can't spend more than an hour or two at my house.

That's the reality of living with allergies unfortunately.

She needs to start on Flixonase a few days before coming to your house, it will be a game changer. The problem is, does she want to take something every day for an occasional visit (it works as a preventative, not a treatment so needs to be taken all the time)?

Darker · 16/08/2023 09:41

I want to be able to offer them a bed for a few days… I’m keeping that room cat free at the moment.

sometimes it isn’t so bad and sometimes the eyes go within a couple of hours.

My SiL is severely allergic to cats so doesn't ever visit and when DD and DGSs come over when they get home they have to strip off and shower.

Go meet your friend elsewhere or give up your DCat.

WestOfWestminster · 16/08/2023 23:50

Honestly if I was your friend, I'd rather just meet elsewhere than have to medicate myself just to come to your house. Surely as a good friend you would understand that.

It's very unlikely that you'll ever be able to do that for someone who has allergies.
