Took my kitten to be spayed, they saw she had fleas so they gave us some treatment. I put it on her buta few weeks later she still keeps scratching loads. Been through her with the flea comb but there's nothing there.

However I have woken up with flea bites. I did flea treat my other cat as well and go through him with the comb. I'm going to go through again, it's too early to re apply treatment again so I'm going to just try and sort the house out.

What order do I do this in? I know I should wash all bedding and things where the cats have been on a hot cycle, Hoover and spray with flea killing spray. Do I spray, leave it a while and then Hoover? Or the other way around? Can someone who has got rid of fleas please let me know the best way to go about it. I feel stressed and overwhelmed

I'd put everything on a hot wash whilst you hoover, spray and hoover again.

Little a**holes drive me mad!

Ginandtoxic · 13/08/2023 10:09

@Caffeinatedhuman brilliant thank you!

Where we live there are alot of problems with fleas

I had to get the exterminator in once and he said to never hoover after you spray as it removed the chemicals that kill the fleas

If we get them popping up i hoover, spray and then spray every other day for a week just in the corners and then hoover after a week or two depending how long I can last and it seems to work well

Keep up with the daily combing as well that will help but their life cycle is from about three weeks to a few months so any eggs adults have laid now could hatch after this set of treatment

@RockSocks okay I will keep at it! God what a nightmare. I take it the spray isn't harmful to cats is it? I can spray it on their beds and things?

Put a flea collar in the hoover to kill any you hoover up!

Ginandtoxic · 13/08/2023 11:16

@GeraldTheGoodMouse that's a good idea! I don't have a flea collar atm so I'm just going to throw away the Hoover bag straight away but will get a collar next week. Thanks for the tip!

Indorex flea spray is your friend!
No need to wash stuff - just spray carpets and soft furnishings thoroughly and keep cats (and humans) away for a couple of hours.

dementedpixie · 13/08/2023 15:02

You normally flea treat every 4 weeks. What flea treatment did you use? Speak to the vet and see if its time to treat your cat again.

Ginandtoxic · 13/08/2023 15:21

@dementedpixie she was only treated on 28th July! But yes I'm going to call them tomorrow and ask if I can do another because she was scratching so much today so I went though her with the comb again and managed to get 5. Seems like they're gone now and she hasn't itched since. I've hoovered and sprayed all of the house thoroughly and I'll ask about giving her some more treatment but I feel like they will say no because of it only recently being done. But it obviously didn't work

Its not that it didn't work. Most fleas/eggs are in the environment and not on the cat. They need contact with the cat/to bite in some cases in order to be killed. That's why you would spray your carpets/soft furnishings as that kills fleas/eggs in the house and then any that have contact with the cat would be killed that way.

RockSocks · 13/08/2023 19:19

No it's fine obviously not if they're in a confined space
I have always done one room at a time and shut the door for a while then aired it out as I'm asthmatic my two cats and the dog get their beds ect done I'd lf it's not ones I can wash
They all use one of those raised beds and sleep together so can't pop that in the wash
Only things I move are chew toys and food/water

Underside of the sofa if they are on it regularly that's always been a hot spot for us

If your struggling to contain an infestation ever I highly recommend using an exterminator he was amazing and did our old two up two down with a small extention for £70 this was about 3 years back but the spray made the fleas infertile I think? And killed them so no more eggs could be laid he was lovely about it as well

Ginandtoxic · 13/08/2023 20:02

Ah thanks everyone, house has been sprayed and hoovered and i will keep repeating the process until I'm sure they're gone. Failing that I will look into the exterminator! Thank you
