What tastes like Dreamies?

Cat has something wrong with him. Is on his last legs. Enjoying attention and is purring but not eating, though clearly hungry. We've tried his usual food, 'gourmet' food, tuna, chicken etc but all he will eat is Dreamies. Is there a cat food similar to Dreamies we can try? Would it be bad for him to have more than the recommended portion of Dreamies? Trying to make him as comfortable as possible in his last days.

I think if you know he is on his last days, fill him up on the dreamies. It wont change the outcome unfortunately and he will be happy

MidnightMeltdown · 12/08/2023 13:14

You should take him to the vet to be put to sleep. He's likely to be suffering

I agree. I know it's hard to let go but if he's got to the stage of not eating a quick euthanasia is kinder than a lingering end.

Let him have whatever he wants now, and prepare yourself that the time might have come to say goodbye to him Flowers

My cat’s last meal was as many Dreamies as she wanted and two Lickelix 🤍

Sorry to hear this - I lost my 18 Yr old girl on Thursday and feeding had become obsessive with me. Have you tried Lick-e-licks? If he likes these then maybe puree down some of his favourite treats with this? We've been using a mini food processor. Will he drink spring water juice from tins of tuna or salmon? Just making life easier for him may help.

So sorry Flowers

Is be booked in to be PTS?

I had a couple of days with my last old boy before he was PTS and just fed him his favourite things.

Cats purr to self soothe so it doesn't necessarily mean he's happy and calm, might just be doing his best to calm himself.

Family member used to work for company that makes Dreamies the biggest issue with eating too many is that you wouldn't get balanced nutrition from them " it would be like trying to live off Pork Scratchings" but you aren't aiming for long term balance.
Have you tried Sheba? Apparently that is designed for palatability and enjoyment and is made by the same company as dreamies.

TucSandwich · 12/08/2023 13:36

We expect he will be pts next week. Just didn't want to give him diarrhoea or anything with too many Dreamies.

They could be sick if they ate too many, they are very rich food's compared to standard cat food.

MidnightMeltdown · 12/08/2023 14:29

Unfortunately vets don't always suggest euthanasia, even when it's clearly the right thing to do. I very much regret not having our elderly cat pts sooner after he stopped washing. The vet didn't suggest it, but I realise now that he was suffering. You may need to ask about it.
Sometimes it really is the last kindness we can do for them.

TucSandwich · 12/08/2023 15:42

It's been discussed with the vet. It was one of the options put forward and will happen soon. But it wasn't what I asked about.

I buy these sometimes for my friends' cat. He loves Dreamies and likes these even more.

With respect, what you've asked doesn't really make sense. The cat isn't refusing food because he's being fussy, he's doing it because he's extremely unwell.

If you keep giving him treats then he's likely to get an upset stomach and he will become dehydrated if he's not eating wet food. If he will drink cat milk, or the juice from Tuna, then you may at least be able to keep him hydrated.

It's odd that the vet has sent such a sick animal home.

QueefQueen80s · 13/08/2023 11:51

Please get a second opinion.. our cat was hours away from being pts, he's about 12 so not old.
We went to see him and he perked up a tiny bit, enough for them to say Okay we'll send him to vet hospital. Turns out he had pneumonia and just needed antibiotics
He was like a young cat again within 2 weeks!
Obviously it could be the end but you haven't given enough detail

QueefQueen80s · 13/08/2023 11:54

Sorry he needed feeding tube for a week and appetite increaser etc to get his strength up but only meds were antibiotics

Unicorn34 · 15/08/2023 08:56

@TucSandwich is there any update on your boy?
