Has anyone ever found a way to stop a cat kneading when he purrs

Hope everyone is having a happy International Cat Day!

One of my DCats is a fiend for “kneading” when he comes to us for a fuss. He likes to curl up next to me to be stroked, and then the kneading starts, and it really, really hurts. I try to move his paws, but he doesn’t like that and either leaves or just puts them back where they were. It’s such a shame, because he ends up getting far less fuss than he wants or deserves.

Has anyone ever found a way to stop cats kneading?

Thanks in advance.

Do his claws need a trim?

Have a blanket on hand and put it between you and the paws. They don't really care what they knead on, but I'd be surprised if you managed to stop a cat from kneading altogether!

Mine put in overtime at the biscuit factory and they are only happy if they have bare skin to work with! I get their claws clipped regularly and there are scratching boards dotted around the house to keep the little knives at bay!

Mine purr regardless but fo the full on dribble purr always needs a blanket because that comes with biscuits

Our childhood cat did this, she lived til 19 and we just ended up having a little fleece tea towel sized cloth we'd grab when she came over for a fuss... Helped with the happy dribble as well as the happy paws, Grin

Can’t you just keep something on the sofa to put between your leg and his claws? We had an old blanket but I’m sure something smaller would also work.

I wouldn’t try to stop them kneading as it’s a way they comfort themselves and show affection. So it’s not a behaviour that should be ‘corrected’.

As a pp said, his nails may need a trim, but you could also keep a blanket handy and place this across your lap/side so that when he wants some affection there’s a soft bit of protection between you and his claws.

Mine usually does it to my squishy muffin top! His claws can dig in a bit but they do it because they love you 😍

Thank you for replying. No, his claws are the right length - and he needs them sharp so he can escape from foxes etc by climbing over fences or up trees.

So many happy, loved cats! 😻

I should have said, he doesn’t like a blanket.

He likes to come onto my lap and then sort of stretches himself up my body until his front paws are on my shoulder and his nose is curled into my neck. It’s a bit like an upright cat hug. Very hard to describe! And very lovely.
