How to get neighbours cat to stop pooping in garden

Basically a neighbours cat like clockwork takes a dump on the grass outside my parents bedroom window every morning. It is driving my DF crackers. He's also getting elderly so isn't fit to pick it up every day.

Is there any deterrents that do actually work before he falls overs picking up next doors cats shit?

Get your own cat. It won’t shit In its own garden and will also deter other cats. 😁

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/07/2023 16:58

Or he could ask the neighbours to come round daily and pick the poo up?

oakleaffy · 30/07/2023 16:59

If anyone had a fail safe method for stopping cats shitting in their garden, they’d be a millionaire.
Even owning a dog isn’t a deterrent-

Crikeyalmightey · 30/07/2023 17:00

Sprinkle chilli powder in its "spot" and leave a 2 litre plastic bottle half filled with water lying nearby. It will go elsewhere. (hopefully not in your DF garden).

Helterskelt3r · 30/07/2023 17:00

Oranges Grin

cats hate oranges

oakleaffy · 30/07/2023 17:02

A super soaker kid’s spray toy, loaded with soapy water ( Fairy liquid) used to be a popular method-
So say cats don’t like the soap.

Not tried it though.

Adopt a tortoiseshell cat, they don’t take any shit and will defend the garden.

minipie · 30/07/2023 17:06

Lay some chickenwire or smaller mesh across that area. Cat won’t want to walk on it let alone poo there. Of course they may just move to a different area of garden… but they might find a nicer spot in someone else’s garden.

DelilahBucket · 30/07/2023 17:08

Lots of people get the little gadgets that omit a high pitched noise when they detect movement. They have good reviews on Amazon. Not pleasant for humans that can hear that frequency though 🙉.
We used these gel ball things we got on Amazon and it did work. We checked they were environmentally friendly and non toxic. They dissolved after a few days but they did work. After a few treatments the habit was broken.

AngelAurora · 30/07/2023 17:10

You simply cannot do anything, cats have roaming rights, it's what cats do.

Yusay · 30/07/2023 17:11

Don’t use chilli powder (or anything else that’s poisonous to cats).

You could try lion manure / cat repellent. Or maybe cover the lawn with plastic for a few days until the habit is broken

But bottom line is if the cat wants to go there it will continue to do so and there is nothing you can do. Best option may be providing a nearby area of fresh loose soil to entice the cat to use that instead.

This is true!

My garden has a couple of pigeons who like to sit in the tall tree and poo on my lawn. Nothing I can do, but I have learned not to leave garden furniture there.

justcba · 30/07/2023 17:16

Try 'Cat/Dog Stop' granules. Garden centres or diy stores.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 30/07/2023 17:16

Orange peel. Buy him a bag of oranges. Eat them and put the zest on that bit of lawn. Repeat every couple of days till the cat pisses off.
Also buy him a water pistol/super soaker, because it will make him happy.

Fivecatsandonelizard · 30/07/2023 17:20

We did a number of things to stop/deter the local cats (a lot of strays)

-started feeding a fox that came into the garden (who never pooed in the garden !!)
-cleaned the patio area with lots of jeyes fluid
-put spikes along the fence
-buried a layer of chicken wire just under to surface of the mud where they were pooing
-orange peel and egg shells everywhere
-wind chimes
-fake snake on the grass

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/07/2023 17:23

When this happens we rotate
Orange peel
Chilli powder
Spiky things like bits of dead Christmas tree or holly when we prune that
Cat repellent from Amazon (also kills plants though.

Mouthfulofquiz · 30/07/2023 17:37

Chilli powder, plant some spiky or thorny plants and scaring the shit out of them with a big water gun a few times should help.

NewYearOldCold · 30/07/2023 23:27

We used coffee grounds - picked up at Starbucks.

bluebirdsongs · 31/07/2023 07:54

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas definitely no cat themselves! My DF is not great on his feet. It's bad enough keeping the kids from knocking into him and a clear path that's not covered in toys on the floor 🙈

And unfortunately their neighbour isn't in a fit state to pick it up either. She's had an illness a few years ago and has never recovered, mainly with memory issues. She struggles to look after her home and garden.

Thanks for all the suggestions will read through and see what they haven't tried yet.

It's in their front garden so don't want anything unsightly - but what's more unsightly that a pile of poo 😂

I am worried that the cat will just keep moving further along their garden the cats spot is the closest point to their own garden.

Also nothing harmful to the cat either. When my DM is out gardening the neighbour comes out to check she isn't using anything that would be harmful to cats. Parents wouldn't want to make a cat sick either.

DM also said she now thinks neighbour is feeding seagulls in her garden as she says there's recently been a huge amount in her garden and there's now loads of bird poo on their driveway now 🤦🏻‍♀️

This is a zombie thread. BUT I think this is a dreadful thing to do.
Yes of course they should have picked it up, but it is still a wicked thing to do😡
