Is it dangerous to give a cat flea treatment after 3 weeks rather than a month because we're going on holiday and have just had an infestation!

I had another thread where I discovered that we have an infestation of cat fleas

We've hoovered and sprayed with indorex and all are recovering.

Our cat was given the flea treatment, Advocate, on the 8th July so is due to get the next dose on the 8th August.
However we are going on holiday from the 2nd August to the 20th August.
The vet said it's dangerous to give the flea treatment a week early as it's very strong.
If we don't give it before going on holiday it will be almost 6 weeks before the next treatment which worries me as I don't want another infestation!
Any thoughts/advice?

I've done it <shrug>. No harm perceptable

I've also done it.

Yes it'll be fine. We use Advantage which is Advocate without the worming element and it says it covers them for 3-4 weeks. We usually reapply every 3 weeks because we also had an infestation last year and it was horrible. I think I developed OCD with cleaning and hoovering literally. It took over my mind and life!

Cluelessat33 · 29/07/2023 20:37

I had an issue a couple of years ago, when I looked into it you can reapply after 14 days. Which I did. A couple fibtikes to break the cycle. It worked.

I've done it. Leave it as long as possible (I'd do it on the 1st). I did call the vets though and they said it was fine as Leroy had live fleas on him.

I think it’ll be fine. We had to use it on 4 week old kittens despite being told it was dangerous and they were all fine (tbh it was a choice between flea treatment and them surviving and no treatment and they didn’t!) They were abandoned in our garden for 2 nights we took turns sitting out watching and no mother cat came back - we called all the rescues - none had Space. The kittens were infested and I couldn’t have them in the house like that and I wasn’t able to bath them as I’m really allergic so we flea treated them and I hosed them down in the garden then they lived in the conservatory till they had their new owners

Link to the data sheet. Under clinical particulars there’s a section at the bottom about overdosing risk

We give flea treatment every 4 weeks rather than monthly. 4 weeks for you would be 5th August so if you gave it on 2nd August you'd only be 3 days early
