My Siamese is under house arrest and not happy

Hi litter tray people. I have two Siamese cats. One is an elder of ten and my youngest is two. The eldest has always enjoyed a potter about in the garden and never goes beyond it. I started letting the little one out too and she did the same as the oldest, never going far. I'm always keeping a close eye on them and get them back in after they've had a sniff about. Yesterday one of my neighbours popped round to say the little one was three houses down and on the pavement! Now I'm too scared to let her out and she is not happy with this new arrangement. Anyone got any advice? Will she chill out and become accustomed to being an indoor cat. I can't risk her safety.

Oh dear. Can you cat proof your garden or get a catio?

Siamese are so clever but they are wanderers. I grew up with one who used to travel several miles hunting and we used to go out in the car to find him. He lived to be 15 so did ok.

Is that a lilac point or a blue point? Adorable - I would love to have siamese again.

Hi Whirlyhead, She's a blue point. Thank you for the catio suggestion. She currently yowling at me and looking to see if any windows are open. 😩. I have a friend who is a carpenter so will get him round to see about constructing a catio

What's wrong with her being three houses down?

Lots of cats won't settle indoors, especially once they've had a taste of what it's like to roam.

Thank you for responding Cinnamonfrench toast. We live on quite a busy road so I was concerned with her trying to cross it. I know I will struggle with her once being allowed out, but I want to keep her safe.

My parents bought an expensive catio from Omlet. So worth a look at them. Obviously the cat hates it 🤣

You could try a Catio but they're not cheap and won't stop the cat getting out of the house through an open window or similar. Cat-proofing the garden is another option as long as you're vigilant with windows etc.

The thing is if you have cats and let them out, part of that means having little to no control over where they go and what they do. Mine stay in a cat-proofed garden for this exact reason but they've also never had the chance to roam so don't really know what they're missing.

She can’t be on call, can she? Good luck keeping her in as they same to know when you are going to the door.

They're gorgeous 😍 I've got indoor cats and would never let them out. Right next to a busy road and would always worry. They are happy and content x

We have one siamese and one oriental. Both indoor cats. You can get a catio or cat proof your garden. We've never done either so far as it's north facing (so catio would have no sun and we thought they may not go in it) and not easy to cat proof.

If you are going to build a catio, can you take them out on a lead until its built? We take ours out occasionally, but one is a wimp. They have zero sense between them, and the breeders stipulated that they must be indoor unless they live well away from main roads. They never care too much, and they do have a ridiculously big cat tree, which cost £500 and keeps them entertained. If we move house one day I would like to either give them a catio or cat proof the garden.

My parents also had 4 Orientals throughout my life, and 2 were hit by cars. One died very young, and one had a broken pelvis, which gave her bad arthritis when older. I decided that 2 out of 4 was reason enough to keep them in.

Just found this thread. My last cat was half Siamese (chocolate and snowshoe point) and have moggy and according to breeder was very Siamese and the most out of his 2 litter mates.

He had the yowl, long legs, curved moon back and round eyes.

One day I found him inside with filthy legs and paws. Neighbour said she’d seen him in a small wildlife pond which was across a busy road in the park (about 1 street away). My yoga teacher who has a yoga cabin in her garden and a catio said she’d seen him (he wore a collar then). This was across the park (same one with pond). He hated dogs so god knows how he avoided them in the park. He also got locked into a shed or garage a street and a bit away past the local school for a week. Almost certain it was that way as I covered the area with door knocks and leaflet drops.

For my cat he could’ve been indoor but loved roaming. Was neutered. I did consider a catio.

I’d probably try a catio to be honest.

It’s difficult because once they have had a taste of the great outdoors it’s hard to go back.

I have a ragdoll who used to stay in our garden until one day she discovered she could scale a 3 foot fence. The loss of control is difficult. Dcat then discovered she could get out front via next doors garden gate and used to sit in their front garden. That used to worry me so much until they changed their gate and now she hasn’t another figured a way to get out front.

I worry desperately about Dcat if she hasn’t been seen for an hour but she always does come back and her territory is basically 3 gardens, ours and either side. Dcat responds to her name and does come when I call which is reassuring. Does your cat respond similarly?

Other than cat proofing your garden, I think you are going to struggle to put the genie back in the bottle. You will end up with one sad cat.
