Help with a lost / stray cat

We’ve taken in a cat this evening that has been sitting on my neighbour’s step since early this morning. She’s incredibly friendly and made herself at home but I’m wondering what else we can do? She’s been fed, watered and we’re about to pop out and get some litter. We’ve put her picture on our Facebook pages, local residents Facebook pages and the lost and found pet page. We’ll take her to the vets on Monday to see if she’s chipped.

She’s very petite and seems well cared for but I’m also wondering if she’s had kittens. Her nipples seem quite pronounced and there seems to be fatty tissue around each of them. Not sure if anyone can see anything from this picture?

Try the Nextdoor app. Ours are always full of lost cat posts.
If you are concerned she has kittens it would probable be best to see if the vet has a clinic this evening or Sunday morning. Ours has both. Kittens might not be able to survive until she sees the vet Monday-although I’m thinking if she has been sat on a step all day, any kittens she may have had might already be gone.

I forgot about Nextdoor. I deleted it as it was annoying but I’ll add it back on my phone. She seems too well cared for to have had kittens outside or been living rough. I think it’s more likely that she’s escaped and got lost (or been kicked out). She’s definitely settled right in!

I think you're doing all the right things so far, so no advice, but I would like to say thankyou on the cats behalf. It's amazing how many people can turn a blind eye when a needy cat turns up.

She's adorable . I'm sure she's someone's pet, but they might not even have realised that she's moved in with someone else yet - my big Tom cat has been out since 6am and might not be back until bedtime (when he'll time his return to be able to sleep on my bed until 5 am when he'll wake me up and nag me to let him out)

We had to put our 19 year old puss down just before Christmas so it’s lovely having a furry friend back in the house. I can’t believe how calm and settled she is. She looks quite young but has happily slept for the last two hours. It’s probably been a stressful day as she’s been outside in thunder and lightening and torrential rain.

I'm sure you are well intentioned OP - but there is a very good chance that she is a 'six dinner Sid' and is just trying it on. I hope you are going to let the cat out again if it asks to go out (and return home).

TattiePants · 15/07/2023 21:47

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats its possible and she’s been in to the back garden a few times tonight but wants to come back inside quite quickly. It’s very windy in the morning but once that dies down we’ll open the door again and encourage her to go outside. She was on my neighbour’s step in awful weather for 8-10 hours today and I don’t think was fed so there were definitely easier ways to get a free meal.

Honestly, a cat that's recently had a litter is more likely to have been turfed out ime. Dealing with rescues there are far more abandoned animals than people realise.

Definitely try to find an owner, although I'm not sure letting her out is a good idea, if she comes into heat she'll be liable to wander off again and the last thing she needs is to be lost and pregnant again.
