Male cat blocked urethra - any experience?

Cat was unable to pee due to blockage which they are saying is due to protein, no stones or anything else underlying. May be caused by stress, which I think is probably other cats in the garden. Has anyone else had this? It has been a very expensive vet bill covered by insurance but we need to try to prevent it happening again, also very unpleasant and potentially dangerous for the poor cat

Our cat has had a couple of UTIs which we think have been caused by stress and not drinking enough. Luckily he didn't get a blockage and responded to antibiotics and painkillers. We find that mixing some water into his wet food every day is helpful (we feed wet and dry). Also if there is no wee in the litter tray in the morning (he usually does one wee and one poo a day which I see when I scoop) then we know he probably hasn't drank enough so we try and get more fluid into him asap, usually by giving him the water from a tin of tuna in spring water and that usually gets him weeing again.

Unfortunately I have lots of experience with this.

Ideally you want your cat to eat a primarily wet diet - no biscuits or dry food/treats. You can also add water to his wet food to make sure he gets as much liquid as possible.

I would also recommend giving him daily Cystease/Cystaid tablets as well as D-Mannose supplements for bladder health (all available on Amazon).

Is he an indoor cat? If so, you can get frosted film to go on the windows so he can't see other cats in the garden. It may also be worth looking at the location of his litter trays - generally cats prefer privacy so somewhere quiet where he's not overlooked would be good if possible.

One of my cats had this, he had an op, then was put on a special urinary diet - the Royal Canin one, which they do as a dry and wet food. He wasn't allowed anything else. He went on to live a happy life, until he died when he was 18.
