My cat was spayed Monday afternoon and she’s still really miserable

Is this OK? She’s eating, drinking and using her litter tray but she’s lacking in any interest in anything. She was an absolute nutcase until this - now I can only just get her to look at her toys, she might bat at a feather half heartedly, but just wants to flop on her bean bag hour after hour. The word I want to use is depressed. There was a blue bottle buzzing about earlier and she watched it fairly closely but didn’t summarily execute and scoff it - this isn’t normal behaviour. I know she’s just been through something serious but it was Monday and it’s now Thursday - I thought she might be up on her feet at least by now?

Cones made mine all miserable so they were off after 24hrs

AlisonDonut · 13/07/2023 13:23

Is your camera broken?

hartof · 13/07/2023 13:28

My cat had stomach surgery due to a blockage and I didn't bother with the cone. He was miserable enough after 4 nights in the vets and over a week of illness. He was fine didn't touch them (and he is usually a little menace for messing with things - hence he had surgery to remove flip flop from his stomach).

It took him a few weeks to be normal again and forgive us, I would take the cone off and you'll probably see a big improvement.

BillyNoM8s · 13/07/2023 13:33

Did you post about this the other day everyone said not to bother with the cone?

Take it off!

My cats had zero cones for spay and neuter. No issues at all.

Cat tax?

A photograph of your lovely cat. It's the tax all must pay for participating in the Litter Tray. (Note the capital letters.)

This is her when she’s not grumpy - I can’t take one of her right now as she’s under the coffee table!

I have no advice but I have had a really similar experience recently. my cat was neutered about 5 weeks ago and she still isn't herself.

The wound healed well and quickly and we medicated her, she ate and drank well but she still seems very nervous and skittish and looks strange (you know when their eyes look sad?😔 ). She also doesn't seem very steady on her feet.

I have another, slight younger cat to be neutered soon and I'm very nervy about it.
I hope your cat is back to normal soon.

😆😆

OP I also suggest taking the cone off. None of mine have ever had cones and they've always been fine with their wounds. Do keep an eye on her though. I had one spayed a few months back and a couple of days in she wasn't herself, very lethargic and generally not happy. Turns out she had an infection which could have been caused by the op or maybe a reaction to the stitches, either way she had to have antibiotics.

Florissante · 13/07/2023 14:52

She definitely has Opinions! She's a cutie.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 13/07/2023 14:59

That is one cute kitten.

Infection can be internal though and even though she isnt off her food she is not herself so I'd go in. We can't accurately take her temperature like the vet can.

If she gets worse it will happen over the weekend when their closed because that's how cats operate.

TammyJones · 13/07/2023 15:29

Lovely kitty
Look at those paws
Our cat didn't have a cone.
Perfectly fine.

ohforgoodnessake · 13/07/2023 15:40

Our 5 month old kittens were spayed last Friday and, apart from one blip, are fine now. One of them went really quiet three days later then threw up over the coir door mat but the vet nurse checked her the next day and said it may have been a reaction to the pain relief (Metacam). Other one (bit of a runt, actually) has been fine. They are bouncing around as usual now (mindful of vets advice to keep them quiet 🙄) OP your kitty is gorgeous.

Have you seen the vet? There should be no effects of spaying after the first 24 hours. It sounds as though some muscle may have been caught up in the stitches (or something like that - I'm not a vet but we have had cases like this - and that's as well as I can understand the explanation). You really need to speak to a vet as this really isn't right.

Legwork · 13/07/2023 18:54

I talked to the vet today and she also thinks that it’s probably the cone and that she’s hating life right now. She said she would really very much want us to get to day 5 before taking it off, after that the payoff is a diminishing return on her well-being. I really want my cat back, but I don’t think I would forgive myself if something happened after I ignored a vets advice to just wait until Saturday morning. At least that’s only 5 days rather than 14? Her absolute favourite thing is the world is to play fetch with a nerf dart and she did just look mildly interested when my husband threw one gently (didn’t use the pistol) . She sauntered over but didn’t pick it up or bring it back to him - she did at least follow it across the room which is the most walking she’s really done today that wasn’t to the litter tray . Hope I’m doing the right thing. Miss her.

Aww she's very cute. Are her ears or armpits hot? That's a sign of infection and is how I monitored ours post surgery

Talkingtothetrees · 14/07/2023 15:49

My cat was like this for about a week after hers. We genuinely thought we had broken her :( but I think she was in pain

Kittekats · 14/07/2023 19:05

One of ours was awful for a couple of weeks after but she managed to get an infection in the operation wound and also in her leg where they had put the drip in. She ended up having to have a jacket (to stop our other cat grooming her wounds) and a cone (to stop her licking her front legs), she was so depressed it was heartbreaking. I have never seen a cat look so sad. She did recover fine though, it just took time (and antibiotics).

We have another little one due to be neutered soon but he’s a boy so hopefully simpler.

Thank you, I think I will. I mean, I'm probably making it sound worse than she is, she still goes outside and plays with her sister (chucking each other about as usual!) and will cuddle on our knees so she isn't dreadful, but there's just something off about her, definitely better to get it checked out.
