Kitten swallowed a bobble. Having surgery - handhold please

Our 5 month old kitten swallowed a long hair bobble this morning. She's very small so I called the emergency vets (no normal vets open) to see whether they think she could pass it in her poo but they advised she comes in for them to induce vomiting.

Unfortunately it didn't work and she wasn't sick. They said with how long the bobble is and because she's so small they don't think she would be able to pass it. They are going to try and scope it out but they think that the tube to put down her throat would be too big and they might not be able to do it, in which case they will take her into theatre and try and find it.

She swallowed the bobble at 8:30 this morning so I think it would be out of her stomach by now anyway so looks like it will be surgery. However she only just had her spay operation 4 days ago and she's already going under for another. I feel so so guilty, I feel horrendous and I can't stop crying. So much to go through in such a short space of time at 5 months old.

I'm just looking for some comfort really

Good news, OP

This story reminded me of a time when

Doopydoor · 11/07/2023 15:08

Our kitten did similar. We decided to watch and wait. For future reference for anyone reading this, the piece of elastic took MUCH longer to pass than the vet had indicated - nearly a week!
Glad your kitty is ok!

drivinmecrazy · 11/07/2023 15:09

Sorry hadn't meant to post!
Reminds me of years ago when DD2 was ten months old and we were on holiday. DD ate an ear bud from DHs ultra expensive headphones.
He was due to fly back the next day and leave us for another three weeks.
He was very stern so told me I had to check DDs nappy to make sure I didn't miss her passing the piece.
Needless to say once I'd dropped him at the airport there was no checking off the nappies.
He's never quite got over it!!
Glad your kitty has produced the goods, they can certainly put you through the ringer 😂

Good news! Kittens are daft as anything.
They seem to have less of a death wish as they get older.

He's done it before - he's absolutely fine at the moment and I suspect he'll randomly and loudly throw them up in the middle of the night some time this week, and then try to eat them again if we don't get to them fast enough.

Thay reminds me of one of our old Labradors! She was staying at the vets where my relative worked as we were away and they were looking after her. An area manager who used to work as vet took it upon themselves to trim a claw and when they went too low & it bleed, they put a bandage on it. We couldn’t even leave our Labrador with a bed and all bowls had to be metal because she would chew EVERYTHING. By the time, my relative know about it and dashed to remove the bandage, she had already eaten it. We had 2 or 3 days where she would half vomit it up in the night but by the time I woke up enough to try and stop her, she would re-eat it! After a week or so, it did make its way to the other end… and got stuck that end too…came out with a little of my help using surgical gloves 🤮. My relative was fuming! There was a sign on their kennel saying they chewed everything and the area manager should not have been trimming claws!

I’m glad it’s all resolved ok Op. It’s such a hard call knowing when to make the commitment and go for surgery.

Florissante · 11/07/2023 15:29

@Usernameisntavailable, a photo showing us the patient in full health would be appreciated.

Florissante · 11/07/2023 15:30

I mean, cat tax and all...

spiderlight · 11/07/2023 15:47

@GoldLacewingOrpington - labradors are very, very, um, special, aren't they?! Glad all was well in the end.

OP - we definitely need a pic to prove your kitten is OK!

My toddler son ate a playmobil soldier's helmet, complete with plastic feather crest- luckily I didn't realise until it was, er, collectable. Likewise my little brother ate my mother's watch battery. She put it back in, but sadly it didn't work after transit!

WombatCowgirl · 11/07/2023 20:54

Agree about the cat tax OP!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/07/2023 21:01

My brother ate tinsel as a toddler. DM only realised when it appeared in his nappy.

Our TwatCat has the brain of a small rock, and regularly tries to eat, well, everything. It's quite hard to have a household with no string, ribbon, elastic, cotton, shoelaces, packing tape, soft plastic, plants, blu tac, cardboard, paper, toys of any description or fabric that may fray under concerted attack.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/07/2023 21:02

Oh. And my hair.

Noseylittlemoo · 11/07/2023 21:07

When my previous cat was almost 2 he started vomiting foam on New Years eve/day and not eating which was completely out of character . Cue ££ to visit emergency vet. They sent him home after giving him an antisickness medicine but he was still no better so we took him back over night. I got a call in the early hours to consent to them opening him up to work out what was wrong after he deteriorated rapidly. It turns out he had swallowed a whole almond which had blocked his digestive tract!
At £3k worth of treatment , that had to be the most expensive almond in the world!

He was extremely lucky it didn't cause serious internal injury! Swallows batteries are incredibly dangerous.

Shopper727 · 11/07/2023 21:41

Aw glad all was well, my cat was fine had a cone on for a while but luckily she was fine. I’ve never had another balloon with a string on it in the house, they get chopped off lol expensive accident.

Cat tax payable

nettie434 · 11/07/2023 22:08

Thank goodness! You must be so relieved. It's a first for me to have been pleased to see a photo of a hair bobble that has passed through a cat!

Usernameisntavailable · 12/07/2023 10:33

Can't believe I didn't pay my cat tax!

Here she is.. she was spayed last week and won't leave her stitches alone so I bought this off Amazon. It had long sleeves and she couldn't walk so had to cut them off

She's a cutie!

Beamur · 12/07/2023 11:18

Bless. I got my kittens those all in one suits to stop them licking and they had the oddest reaction to them. They just laid down on their sides and refused to move at all. Took the babygros off and they shot off!

Circumferences · 12/07/2023 11:24

So gorgeous!
Wonderful that she was so thoroughly looked after and a happy ending that she passed the offending item
