Does colour matter?

So we want to get a kitten. Have decided on Siamese/ Oriental as we've had them before and LOVE their in your face, attention seeking ways. I've secretly always loved black cats because they look like little pumas but never actually had a black cat. So I was trying to find an Oriental or Siamese who will be ready around the right time - we're off on holiday soon so would have to be when we get back. Has to be a boy BC we have an adult female and everyone seems to think she'd be more likely to accept a boy. Also don't want to drive too far to collect.
Have found one. He's a beautiful black Oriental kitten. Literally everything I want in a cat BUT DH has a thing about black cats I've just discovered. Says they look "a bit mean". Now we had a red point before and he had told me he didn't want a ginger cat because "gingers are bullies" but within about a week cat had 100% won him over and DH always tells everyone he was the best cat he ever had. Should I try and talk him into the little black one? I have been struggling to find any other kittens. I don't know if I'm being selfish by pushing him into getting the cat I want or if kitten will just win him over like our last cat did. I mean really how much does cat colour matter anyway?? Thoughts please.

I've had two black cats. Both the soppiest most loving cats ever
Shady, my current cat

Shady! Always a pleasure to see you. The same for the handsome Basil.

OwlBasket · 07/07/2023 14:56

Here she is looking slightly less —demonic— goblin-like. It’s just the way it is with black orientals! IRL you don’t notice it and the panther-ness is much more obvious. TBH if your DP gets to decide the breed you should get to decide the colour

What a gorgeous cat!

Beamur · 07/07/2023 15:04

We have twin cats!
Personally I think they're absolutely stunning. Such lovely personalities too. Mine are very friendly and affectionate.

Beamur · 07/07/2023 15:05

OwlBasket how old is your cat?

justlass · 07/07/2023 15:07

I've only had male black cats and Siamese. Female cats can be crabby, but male cats are just friendly ime.

Currently I have a blue point and a red Tonkinese/Siamese cross. Both lovely temperaments, although very young and VERY energetic. Be prepared for the fact that Siamese/orientals are like a cat/dog cross and may never shut up! 😂

Lovely bonded pair.

Biffatcrafts · 07/07/2023 15:10

Black cats are awesome - well all cats are awesome, but we love our boy Nero. We've had a few black cats over the years and without exception they were incredibly affectionate and not at all evil.

This is him having an afternoon siesta with my DH (in case anyone thinks those legs are mine! 😆😆)

Black cats are beautiful, I'd love a little witchy black cat next time. Apparently they're one of the hardest colours to rehome from shelters. I don't know if coat colour always affects personality but my tortie certainly lives up to the "naughty tortie" reputation. I've not heard of gingers being bullies but I have heard that they're not overly blessed in the braincell department and my last ginger was definitely an adorable dipshit.

OwlBasket how old is your cat?

She was about 9 in the first photo and maybe 14 in the second. We have very few decent photos of her unfortunately, is the only actual drawback to having a black cat.

She lived to be 15 and a half 🖤

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/07/2023 15:40

Why does it remind me of Gizmo from Gremlins? Or whatever film it was…

Anyway I’ve had a black and white half snowshoe and chocolate point and half Black moggy male cat. Looked a bit like a baby bat when I got him at 5 months but grew into his good looks. Sadly died at 5. Nothing wrong with black cats.

MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 07/07/2023 16:17

Your DH is being unreasonable! Black cats are wonderful. One of the sweetest-natured cats I have ever known was a black Oriental girl. She was a purr machine and a knee magnet. Do get your kitten, OP. Your DH will soon be won over by that cute little black bat.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 07/07/2023 16:46

Remind him of the rubbish he spouted about your other cat and how much he loved it. (A bit more diplomatically than that perhaps 😁).

Black cats are the best.

My daughter has two gingers, brother and sister, and the male is definitely a bit dim, not a single thought in his head! But absolutely gorgeous!

Kitten is adorbs & merely looks rightly outraged at the affront to his dignity dirty great humans dandling him about not mean.

Black cats are fabulous. As for the idea ginger cats lack brains - it’s Balanchine, rather than Nijinsky, who worked out how to open the refrigerator & swat things down to his brother. I’m not sure how they came up with having Nijinsky hold the door open so my wee house liger could safely climb into the fridge & rootle round for choice morsels out of swipe’s reach - but the fridge is now locked. (Should I point out that I’m vegan? In fairness, my brother eats cheese & at the hottest point of the summer there’s cat food/treats chilling for them - but they do also refuse to believe me when I tell them they are obligate carnivores & that is why I buy them their ✨fancy✨ food & they have fish loin treats on their birthdays not cake…) Surely people have heard of Jorts - not as in the garment , but the ginger cat who became an internet sensation partly over the suggestion ginger kitties are not the smartest? I’d never heard such a notion before; nor that ginger cats are particularly bad for being bullies. I’d be really interested to see if cultural perceptions of ginger cats vary by cultural perceptions of (& associated behaviour towards) ginger humans though 🤔

Photos of the BalletCats from kitten hood until, er, recently. Including one to prove they do spend some time not snuggled up with each other &/or me; though both of them think that the correct order of things involves the 3 of us being snuggled up asleep together 🥰

I hope your wee kitten brings you much joy OP - but if you’re ever in a position to wrangle your DH to your local Rescue Centre to meet the kittens, Do. It. It sounds like Captain Irrational’s heart would just melt over the wee dotes & you’d be having to limit your cat population… 😄

Just get two. One Goblin/Batfink and one beige/tabby/grey/whatever.

Sorted.

Pudmyboy · 07/07/2023 18:33

Get the beautiful goblin cat, if hubby does not like it then he can go......
Joke!( Or is it?....)

HotelNotPortofino · 07/07/2023 18:43

Any colour but all ginger.
as they are universally all wankers
looks crossly at our all ginger cat…I was warned 😹
her nickname is little ginger bastard
her sister is ginger and white, and she is adorable and utterly stupid. Her nickname is plush toy that shits, you can cradle her like a baby, and she just lies there

LadySlipper · 07/07/2023 18:47

This is Dibbley. He's not scary. His fangs are little freaky, granted, but he is the sweetest cat ever.

Florissante · 07/07/2023 19:14

I would like to give Dibbley a big squoogle.

PollyCreo · 07/07/2023 19:19

My first childhood cat was a tiny little black madam, she lived to the ripe old age of 17. This was surprising as she was both neurotic and intellectually challenged 😅 But the most affectionate cat ever, she died in 1996 and I still miss her funny little ways.

She always hated going outdoors, even when we moved to rural Scotland to a house surrounded by fields and hills and mice 🤷

Isolationendurance · 07/07/2023 19:25

The black cats I know are less relational. Black and white cats are the sweetest natured, tabbies next and tortoiseshells are mischievous, unrepentant trouble makers imo.

Wotwotwotwotwot · 07/07/2023 19:30

Black cats are wonderful
Grey cats are evil. Wonderful but evil
