Kamikaze kitten - let her out?

We have a 4 month old kitten from a rescue (spayed, chipped and jabbed). The rescue asked us to promise that we wouldn't let her out until she's at least 6 months old and in fact they suggested she really shouldn't be allowed out until next Spring because she's black and hard to see in the dark. We also have an older cat who goes in and out using a microchip cat flap. The problem is kitten is OBSESSED with getting out and has escaped 4 times already in the past 2 days (once between someone's legs, once out of an upstairs bathroom window left open a crack and twice by tailgating the older boy as he goes out). She has sussed that the catflap is unlocked when she hears the little click the flap makes when he looks through and she charges across the kitchen to push past him and out.

Once outside she has a brilliant time galloping round, chasing flies, pouncing on leaves etc but she shows absolutely no fear, no normal cat caution or checking her route home and she doesn't respond to our calls or dreamies or her dinner. She's already managed to get stuck in a neighbour's garden and get tangled up in some cord. She is seriously unsafe!

My worry is one of these days very soon she'll get stuck outside without us realising and not know how to get back in. Is it better to give in and let her use the flap and be an in/out cat at 4 months old or should we still be trying to contain her until she develops at least a tiny bit of common sense? I really don't want to limit our older boy from going out because it's the only place he has to escape from her pestering him.

Could I have your MN wisdom?

There's no way I would be letting a four month old kitten out, I'm afraid.

They're very small and vulnerable at that age. They need to be a bit bigger and a bit more robust and capable before they're allowed out to roam unattended. If your garden was cat-proofed or you had a catio then it would be different.

Careerdilemma · 06/07/2023 15:37

No way. Far too young. She'll be run over or lost within the week. Can you keep her shut out of the kitchen?

In the meantime lots of entertainment with wand and fishing pole toys etc.

IheartNiles · 06/07/2023 15:38

Nope, contain her.
Mine stayed in until 9 months and they were pretty stupid then but much better than when they were tiny. For example they looked both ways crossing the road.

Floralnomad · 06/07/2023 15:39

Way too young to be out unless you catproof your garden so she can’t damage herself

TheLifeofMe · 06/07/2023 15:42

Please contain her and don't let her out. One, she hasn't been spayed and the local rescue here sees hundreds of young kittens get pregnant each year because they have "escaped" and not been neutered. Secondly, she is too young to be out. Full Stop. If you are struggling with her then hand her back to the rescue but please just don't think, I have had enough and let her out.

Showerroomlove · 06/07/2023 15:43

Nope. Definitely not.

Haffdonga · 06/07/2023 15:52

Ok thanks everyone. I wish we could cat proof our garden but it's not possible due to trees etc. I agree she's too young but it's the worry about her tailgating the other one and bot having a return route now she's cottoned on to the click that worries me.

She HAS already been spayed.

Can you lock the cat-flap and only give the older cat outdoor access when she's not in the room? Or lock her out of the room where the cat flap is?

It is hard as they're like little ninjas at that age but honestly she's far too young.

Haffdonga · 06/07/2023 15:55

And I'm absolutely not thinking I've 'had enough' of her. Quite the opposite which is why I'm worrying about keeping her safe.

No, definitely not, I'm afraid. It's difficult when you have other cats going out but it's part of being a responsible owner. She's too small and vulnerable to go outside yet. You'll have to lock the catflap and let your other cat out yourself for a few months.

Ì think this is the way we will have to go as you and others have suggested but Kitten really is a ninja. She's also fascinated with the front door and runs towards it if she hears the key turn and someone coming in. Luckily she's not made a dash for it out front yet but she's working on using up her 9 lives a bit too soon for my nerves!

Glad you're going to do what's been suggested, I think it's for the best. Some cats are just fascinated by the big outside and once they realise it's out there they just want to be out in it. She sounds very sweet, if a bit of a pain at the moment. Grin It won't be long until you can let her out. I have a climber kitten at the moment - neither of my other two have shown any interest in climbing. We've actually put some stepladders up so he can enjoy climbing up them as every time we looked up he was on a side table or the top of the book shelves. I drew the line when I found him on the mantlepiece!

She sounds like a your typical kitten to me Grin

Haffdonga · 06/07/2023 16:23

@WarmBeerAndSandwiches she's a mantelpiece climber (and curtain hanger) too! We've had to put all our picture frames and ornaments at ground level as she enjoys pushing them off the edge. Maybe I should give her back to the rescue after all ... (JOKE!)

I have two housecats and one is a bit like this, will bolt for a door if you’re going out. He also worked out the click of the catflap for our old non house cat cat. But we’ve managed to keep him inside for 4 years so it is possible. Four months is too young.

Grin @Haffdonga oh we had shinning up the curtains too. Thankfully, I was thinking about replacing them. They can be a bundle of mischief when they are little but if it's any consolation mine is now nearly a year and he has quietened down so much. He started to get a lot quieter at about eight months and now he is still quite playful but not manic in any way. He is an absolute darling and always was but I must admit he is a lot easier nowadays. Hang in there!

Haffdonga · 06/07/2023 17:01

Interesting link @DesolationRow - thank you! So according to Battersea we're pretty much doing it by the book.

Could you get a harness? Our kitten is just coming up to 6 months and has been out in the garden on a harness and long lead. He's not too keen on having it put on but once on he's not bothered by it

LilacpointMummy · 06/07/2023 17:17

It's really hard to advise without seeing the rascal!

Cat tax

Thanks all Flowers

@Haffdonga I'm surprised at everyone saying no she's much too young. Both my previous kitten and current kitten I've let outside once they've been chipped and neutered at 4 months old. In fact the vet asked me does he go outside when I took him to be neutered. This one we're still early days - he's only been going out this week. But from being an absolute lunatic inside , he's really calmed down. When he's outside he likes to poke around playing with twigs and chasing flies, but I think he's also on high sensory alert which uses up his energy. He doesn't really respond to his name or treats, but tends to stay close to the house and he flaps in and out throughout the day. He doesn't like to miss out on things so when more than 1 person is in the kitchen he comes in and we close the catflap at night time. Good luck!
