Large Indoor plants that are cat safe

Every time I see a large indoor plant i think great that's perfect then I google it and it's not safe around cats (or kids!)

So I'm looking for recommendations for easy to look after large indoor plants!

Hi OP. I've just researched this myself and have decided to get a Kentia Palm. They're safe for cats and are (apparently) easy to care for 🪴

IvI got loads of houseplants. I’ve no idea if they’re are safe for cats. My cat just ignored them. In what way are they unsafe for cats? <eyes spider plant with new suspicion>

Chlorophytum just get them a bit high.

<eyes stoner cat with usual level of suspicion as she saunter past mine>

That's the thing it doesn't really say how they are not safe 🤔 lis it like lillies that they only have to brush against and the pollen can kill them or would they have to actually chew on/eat the leaves? Not sure how trained my cats or kids are 😂

I second Kentia Palm, they are also very easy to look after!

Spider plants are safe, dragon, cheese plant <shows age>, snake plants aren’t safe.

Lillies, chives, garlic, onions, tulips, daffodils are all toxic. Anything from a bulb basically. Lillies and paracetamol are fatal.

I used to be completely paranoid about any plant that said it was mildly toxic to cats, and wouldn't have them in my house. However, my cats ignore any plant that doesn't look like grass. So they do have a nibble on the ponytail palm (safe) because the leaves are long and thin, but don't care about the cheese plant (technically not safe but they'd have to eat an awful lot of it for it to be a problem, and have never even nibbled!). So depends what your cats are like.
As you say, it's an absolute no to lilies, and I wouldn't have anything that has long thin leaves (like grass) that is even mildly toxic. But cheese plant, for example, seems to be fine with my cats

Calathea are also safe btw and can get pretty big! Areca palm too. In my experience Areca palms are easier to look after than Kentia palms, and grow quickly to be bushier with more impact

They have to survive infancy, though.

Fluffy twatcat either absolutely loves or despises them. She will navigate a careful obstacle course consisting of coffee table, two large Snake Plants, a bookcase, a short flight in between the stems on a Monstera and its triple headed growlight, underneath the wiring for the Firestick, behind the TV (about a 2.7 inch gap, past a large Jade plant and an avocado to pick up the tiniest scrap of the Areca tips between her tiniest front teeth, lifts...and then drops the poor bloody thing onto the floor from about six foot up where it's been placed to be as far away from her as possible.

Considering the only safe place for the spider plant(s) - plural due to her last escapade with the one magnificient specimen I had grown from a single spiderlet - is dangling from a curtain rail in the spare room, I suspect that this a protest at being deprived her preferred hallucinogen.

Not bad for something that's about 140 in cat years, weighs roughly a pound wringing wet and has a permanently confused expression on her face at all times where she isn't hunting down unassuming greenery.

She does largely ignore succulents if she can't knock them onto the floor like the now five pots of Crassula I have from the original victim, though.

I've given up on any kind of plant life. My cat takes great delight in knocking anything off a surface. She started with bottles and progressed to cups and vases and it went downhill from there.
The only way I can stop her is to blutac things down.

@NeverDropYourMooncup 🤣🤣🤣 I wondered at first whether you were talking about the cat or plant surviving infancy!!
Yes in fairness my Areca palm often looks tatty after the fluffy overlord has had a snack on it!! Good job she's cute as her only redeeming feature!

Yeah, I keep telling her it's just as well she's pretty. And old. Very, very old.

Ollybob · 02/07/2023 21:46

I have three cats, only one will munch on anything so I like you can't have a big leafy houseplant in the corner of the room!
Last plant I bought I popped it on the floor as I came in as desperate for the loo, by the time I'd come out all the leaves were gone. It was small and non toxic but still!

Cats Protection have produced a list of indoor plants showing whether or not they’re safe for cats; & they also have a list on their website of companies you can order pet-safe flowers &/or houseplants from. They also have a list for outdoor plants, & one for cut flowers too. I’d stick with/pick from what they recommend - I do for cut flowers & the garden; I don’t have houseplants so can’t make personal recs, but hope the list will help.
