Cat still getting ticks even though he's been treated

Please help! I only gave him his treatment last week and I've found 5 ticks attached to him (others I've found crawling in his fur). The one I just pulled out from his chin was huge. I've been giving him a Credelio tablet once a month since he was 3 months old, he's now 8 months old so the treatment should've had enough time to get in his system.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can do? This is my first cat since I was a young child so I've never had this problem before!

Thank you!

I have been using Frontline. Arthur used to get loads, now he doesn't get any. In fact I get more than he does!

I always thought the tick treatments didn't stop them getting the ticks, just killed the ticks that bit them. Happy to be wrong though!

I’d add in a natural repellant like https://www.theneemteam.co.uk/CSJ_BILLY-NO-MATES_50ml.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw1_SkBhDwARIsANbGpFtRr7xx-VCpPIPX7OYuvLSaNXUcxBAGlJkY23_9y4x1Q7IBmBrXNmUaAqODEALw_wcB

Just check with them first that you use it alongside the Credelio but I imagine you can.

Ask your vet
You may need a different kind of treatment e.g. spot on

I use frontline plus on our cats and I've never seen a tick on them even though we live in the countryside and they are constantly out in the long grass.

His vet advised us to use the tablets due to me having two DC. Plus, the first time I tried to put a spot on on him, it went terribly wrong!

You may well be correct, however the one I pulled out this morning was definitely feeding off him as it's body was big and red.

Thank you. Maybe I'll get some of this to try next month! I had one in my arm last week - the first time ever. I was not impressed! I hate the vile things 🤮

Ok thanks, I think I'm going to give this a try.

Tablets are best, wrap it up in a piece of ham and the cat will eat it. Sometimes if you use the same flea treatment or worming treatment they seem resistant to it do I change between Advantage and Frontline Plus. I do 3 months of one then switch to 3 months of the other.

Thank you. I don't have any issues with him eating them, he takes it from my hand like a treat! Didn't think about him becoming resistant to his current treatment though, so that's a good point to raise. I'll definitely try him with Frontline Plus.

No tick treatment stops ticks. Ie frontline is the tick will die and drop off ‘within 48hrs’ of biting. So they can still get big.

We use frontline still. It’s the best option. Our cats still get ticks, and usually we remove as soon as we see. get a tick o twister for easy removal
But if you miss one or cat is out longer, then they won’t end up covered in them like untreated strays.

If it helps, they are worse April- May due to tick cycle. After that ours get hardly any the rest of the summer. None winter. They will get more if you live near woodlands or fields

I see, thank you for this. I just assumed the cats gave off some kind of scent to stop the ticks from attaching to them 🤣
