Help please.. my daughter's cat is peeing on her sofa

The kitty is a Savannah and 12 months old. She normally uses a litter tray in the kitchen. They live in a new build with no door downstairs.
She has recently stopped using the tray for peeing in and is using the sofa. My daughter is very upset. She has stripped the covers off the sofa and they are in the machine but the seats are smelly.
So my question is why?
My next question is how to stop it
My last question is how to get rid of the smell.

For context she is a well fed and happy cat. They live near farmers fields and she hunts a lot - do not know if this has anything to do with anything.
My daughter says the whole house smells of pee and she works from home seeing clients for beauty treatments. She is on the verge of tears this morning

My late cat did that. I put puppy pads under the covers on the sofa so it didn't go through to the cushion. The only thing that stopped it, was physically blocking access with something solid. None of the sprays work! Though they do smell nice

You can try enzyme treatments for cat urine.

Is she cleaning the tray often enough? Does the cat feel disturbed where the tray is? Sometimes they need the tray moved to a quieter place - they often prefer two trays to one as well.

Anything that's changed in the cats environment or health can trigger toileting in other areas too. New people, smells, sounds...diy or decorating, furniture moving about.

She must clean with an enzyme cleaner.

Another tray might be helpful.

Thank you for the replies. We think we have sorted it. She moved the lit tray near to where the cat has her food !

Tray is back where it was before. All we need to do now is sort the smell out so any suggestions will be welcome. I have heard Zoflora is good for eliminating smells but haven't ever used it.

Has she been spayed?

It can be a sign of stress , urinary infection or a change that the cat isn't happy about. Neutering always helps prevent marking and you also have to clean the smell up properly, sadly the couch might need to be replaced 😖 for stress you can get plug ins which calm cats but if none of this works then a vets visit might be in order and utis can become serious in cats

KirstenBlest · 28/06/2023 13:16

The zoflora will cover the smell, but an enzyme spray or white vinegar will probably be better.

Cats don't like an orange scent.

Thank you all

Are Savs prone to uti? Hybrids can be tricky.

Try changing the litter to ultraclumping, ankle deep, big tray and take her to the vet for a check up. Uti don’t present as normal infections, they’ll merrily pack the food away and go out with a uti then throw a positive infection dip test.

It won’t be intentional something will be wrong environmentally or physically.

She needs to use Simple Solution enzyme cleaner.

I was just coming on to say "is the litter tray near the food", as cats won't pee near their food. Seems you've sorted it.

Thank you. I got some yesterday and gave it to her. The Zoflora only masks the smell.
