Rescuing a cat

We are hoping to get a rescue cat this year once the DC go back to school in September (we are thinking a quiet house during the day will be a better option to help the cat settle).

Does anyone have any experience in what we should look for/shopping list? We have no preference over male or female. When I spoke to the local rescue centre they told me they would have lots of kittens by then, would a kitten be easier or harder in terms of settling in?

We have had a rescue cat before, but this was pre-children and he was so easy he just settled straight away! Unfortunately he was hit by a car :(

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Adult cats are way easier! Let the rescue guide you on which cat suits you best.

Yes, fair point! I guess they know the kitties the best.

Two rescue kittens are a very good option.
Done that several times. They play with each other so are much less disruptive than a single one and in my experience are easy to settle in.

Oh gosh I don't think we could manage two of them 😁

Adult cats can be left alone in the house, unlike kittens. And if the rescue is any good they’ll know the adult cats’ personalities & be able to match you up with one.

If you're going to get 2 go for a bonded adult pair rather than 2 kittens. I had 2 litter mates and by the time they were one they absolutely fucking despised each other. I spent the next 12 YEARS breaking up full on snarling cat fights 😱

(Sorry Grumpy 😁)

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats cute ☺️ but it's still a no 😅

My last 3 have been singleton adult rescues, all extremely different characters, but all have been perfect in their own ways.

I'd go for an adult - in fact I did, only 2 adults. One was 5, the other 18 months (younger than I had intended but I just fell for her pretty face 😍

The rescues will know the temperament of the cat and the type of home it's best suited to, plus they are less destructive than kittens (though we have a ruined carpet thanks to DCat2 who seems to think she can dig her way out of a room!).

So if you don't want kitties swinging from your curtains...!!
