Vomiting

Cheddar has always been a sicky cat. Have had her bloods done, and all fine. She eats and drinks well. And Is fine in herself. I thought it was diet related so swapped her to grain free food. She does seem better on this. But is still vomiting every 2-3 days. I've got some probiotic powder that I can re start. Does it take awhile for her gut to settle down on. Re food? Any ideas?

Is it "proper" vomit or is she eating too quickly and regurgitating undigested stuff? Or hairballs?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2023 16:42

It varies. Some of regurgitated, she clearly eats without chewing much. Other times it's proper digested and smells like vomit.

She's not prone to hairballs. But I've restarted the hair ball paste as she loved it.

Tried higher bowls?

purser25 · 28/06/2023 16:53

you can get raised up bowls or for a temporary measure put his bowl on an upturned cereal bowl or small cake tin it does work.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2023 17:08

Been using raised bowls for a few years. They did help. Bit omg they get the food all over the floor.

Oh yes though I got one with two bowls in from tkmax and that seems an improvement

Mini entirely stopped regurgitating her food after his sister died. He did it several times a week - usually when I was in a rush to get off to work. I think he was bolting his food to get it down before she could.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 28/06/2023 18:24

What about a slow feeder so she doesn't rush her food? Does it link up with a specific flavour of food maybe? One of mine can't have tuna flavoured food as he vomits - he's fine with actual tuna though Confused

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2023 18:38

I don't think she's particularly greedy. They are both grazers so no fighting over food. I've cut out cat soup as that definitely makes her sick. Much to her sister's disgust, as she loves it. They love the new food they are on. And it's grain free. The brown marks she used to get round her eyes have completely gone. I could always tell
When she was going to start vomiting as they would get really bad.

They've usually had chicken Iams. Think this one is Tina so will try chicken again.

Mine is the same, although she is only 5 months old and I am hoping she will grow out of it. She has a mix of wet and dry food (also Iams) but it is mostly the dry that she brings up. She is very good at drinking her water and sometimes the sick looks like expanded Iams, almost as if she has eaten Iams then downed a load of water so it has expanded in her tiny tummy and she has brought it up again. It's a tough one as happy that she is drinking, but I wonder if she is drinking too much. Not sure if this is something you have considered?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2023 12:56

That's exactly what cheddars looks like!

Turn the question around, why would a human vomit?

Reflux? Mild Stenosis?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2023 18:00

Spoke too soon. Big pile on the sofa. Regurgitated this time. I do t know where she puts that much food. So I do wonder if she's being a greedy piglet. Have ordered a slow feeding bowl.

Her stomach can't possibly be as big as the amount of sick I've just cleared up!

Can I ask if you are feeding her Felix?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 29/06/2023 19:10

Oh bless her - if it's just regurgitated and you say she drinks a lot, it could be that the food is expanding in her stomach and making her sick.

Is she free-fed? Controlled meals with smaller portions could help.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2023 20:30

I put food down twice a day and they graze. Or so I thought. Maybe she is a greedy guzzle pig after all. She was on Iams dry. She's now on Amazon lifelong.

There is often food left in the bowl at the end of the day/morning

My cat was just the same. Been on Iams for 9 years - it's what the Rescue said was best. He lost loads of weight, poor fur, and poor condition. Had every test going. They wanted to send him to the hospital. But he was so poorly he wouldn't have survived. Insurance wasn't a problem. The Vet eventually suggested changing food. He didn't sell it as it is expensive but told me you can't get better. He said to try Royal Canin Digestive or RC Hypoallergenic. We started on the Digestive one. And it changed his life. But, I have a cleanliness routine, too. Clean bowls are used every day. New food in the bowl, old food on the top. Dry food only initially. With wet food, a clean bowl every day, fresh food, any old thrown away or put in the fridge if he turned up his nose. Within a month he had put on weight, new fur was growing, and he was feeling better. After 3 months he was back to his old self apart from the fur on his ears hadn't grown back. He is now 18 and doing well. He now has different Royal Canin biscuits. Hates wet food. RC advised that Ageing12+ would be best for him once he was settled and not to keep changing to different types. But he likes different ones and has Ragdoll, Digestive, Aging, Furball, Active {he is!} and many more. He is now getting a bit picky like some old cats do. I doubt he would be alive if it wasn't for Royal Canin. Of course, there could be other suitable brands, but I daren't risk it now. I hope that helps, and is certainly worth a try.
