Moving abroad with a cat, or not.

I am utterly sick of the UK, mainly becasue of the winter weather, and would really like to move somewhere warmer, but would it be fair to take my cat? The things I have concerns about are:

  • would he cope with warmer weather? He is black, so at a disadvantage to start with
  • would he cope with a new outdoors environment? He is very much an outdoor cat and I wouldn't want him to have to be a house cat.

I don't think I could cope with rehoming him - he was a rescue cat to begin with and it would just feel too selfish to bin him off, assuming there was someone who would take him and his weird ways. I feel like my only option is to wait until he dies, but he is 11, very fit and healthy and could go on for another 10 years.

Years ago my dm took her friend's dcat down to London to fly to his new life in Germany. Ime dcats love you not their home! Take dcat op. . If you love him!

My friend did it the other way around had dogs and cats out in Portugal. Her husband died so she came home. They're on their third UK home. Just two cats left now. One timid the other struts around and climbs trees. So yes they'll be fine.

Thanks!

Now I just need to work out where I want to go!

My black cat lived with me in the U.K., the Netherlands. Germany, China, Australia. And back again in between. He was an outside cat and totally fine. Lived until he was 19. Cost a fortune in relocation fees 😂 but don't regret it for a second.

How did he cope with the bizarre Australian wildlife?!
Although I think you can only have indoor cats there now.

My former cat, a big puffy Persian lived with me in multiple countries. He wanted to be with me and I wanted him too, so we made it work. You are their home, OP.

Friends black cat was born in Hong Kong, move to Brazil, then U.K., then Georgia, UK, Seychelles then last few years U.K.
Totally happy through out.

Take the cat, he loves you and you love him. Cats LOVE heat anyway. I'd have a catio too if you're worried about the wildlife

Bax765 · 25/06/2023 09:35

He'll be fine! Cats aren't generally too bothered about the heat - they just find somewhere to rest until it's cooler if needed.

I know a few people who have re-located between countries and taken cats and the cats have settled in fine.

My cat made the opposite journey from Dubai to the UK.

He loves the outdoors here but is not impressed with the winter or the rain as he is an Arabian cat with no undercoat so gets v cold and wet through. However he still goes out everyday.

Not sure how my black cat would cope in hot weather, she spends most of the summer dramatically flopping about. But cats do adapt their behaviour v quickly wherever they are.

How long did it take for your cat to get used to going outside. We are adopting a wee cat from Dubai to UK. We are looking for them to be indoor and outdoor with access via cat flap when settled. Does your cat just go in garden or do they like to roam?
