Regurgitating kitten

Looking for some advice if anyone has had this before, and what the outcome was?

We have a 16 week old kitten that is regurgitating his food. Always in the morning, and usually at night.

He eats then regurgitates it then eats it again - about three times before it stays down. His eyes stream and it looks awful! Otherwise he is generally a happy little guy. Very purry, loves zooming with his brother, pooing normally etc.

Ive tried slow feeding, big plates, feeding up a little higher, only tiny soft food, more kibble, stopping him eating. Only feeding a teaspoon sized portion etc etc. if I left food out he would absolutely scarf it and the cycle continues.

He is a Burmese and heading back to the breeder today so she can take him to her vet. But I’ve been googling and can’t see any treatment plan/ideas…

TIA

My oriental has a super sensitive stomach you need to work out a food that wont make them sick.Whats tricky you have to introduce food slowly or that upsets their stomach to.You add little bits at a time of new to old slowly replacing over a week .Then wait a month see if theres improvement .If not its time to try another food

try this one

Is he bolting his food?

Teddypops · 12/06/2023 21:40

Poor baby, I hope you get it sorted. Have you tried plain chicken?

pelicanthedog · 12/06/2023 21:58

Thank you so much for your reply, I thought that, but it’s the same food (royal canin Kitten) he’s been on his whole life, he can also snack on it throughout the day and not vomit?

Yes he would absolutely scarf it if he could, but even if I spread it out over a big plate and in small amounts, first thing in the morning he still regurgitates it.

(I have also tried feeding him away from his brother but it hasn’t changed either).

Can you get slow feeders for cats? One of mine can’t have dried as she doesn’t chew it!

I’ve tried acting as the slow feeder and have given just two teaspoons (one each hour - for two hours) hoovers it up then after two hours regurgitates it.

I’ve tried no dry food, it hasn’t made a difference :/

have not tried boiled chicken, so will see what the Vet says and maybe try that when we get him back.

How often are you feeding him? He could be eating on an empty stomach and feeling sick.

Kittens need lots of small regular meals.

I’ve tried slow feeding, so two teaspoons across a couple of hours, I’ve tried tiny meals throughout the day. He acts like he is insanely hungry a lot of the time. (And would demolish a bowl of food if it was given to him then regurg it up. ( note - he was also wormed 2 weeks ago so not worms ). - he is eating his regurgitation and has put on 200grams in two weeks…

I would just switch his food - something in it clearly doesn't agree with him.

pelicanthedog · 13/06/2023 00:40

Thanks all, it possibly might be hairballs - from his brother from another mother - as they sleep together at night which might explain the regurg in the morning and they have a big sleep together in the afternoon - which might explain the regurg in the evening. (Due to the grooming the small one does to the big fluff!) Will find out as they will be separated as the small one goes off to the vet for a few days! Will report back.

Unlikely to be a hairball unless the kitten is throwing up fur. I would change food.
Why aren’t you taking your kitten to your vet? I hope you went with the breeder for the vet visit. Hope there’s nothing wrong.

Pelicangoesplop · 22/07/2023 10:50

Hello!

An update of sorts, it turns out kitten was intubated while being desexed. This has caused an oesophagus stricture (?) basically his esophagus has narrowed which means he can’t swallow chunky food/kitten biscuits.

The vet that did this to him was either fired or resigned two days afterwards from the practice. Still unsure of all the facts from them other than they were very apologetic and will be covering all his care to do with this going forward…

So we are now on a pâté/soft slurry diet,
with hope that his esophagas will stretch as he grows, otherwise he may need an op to but a balloon down his throat to stretch it.

(if anyone has been through this procedure, do let me know!).

cat tax pic attached, he’s 6 months old now.

Oh good lord no wonder they sacked them! Surely all animals need breathing support during GA or they'd stop breathing. Your poor kitten going through that.

If you can find out their name you can complain to the practice and their governing body.

Poor little kitty. Mushed up cat pate mixed with kitten milk.
