Cat throwing up

Our cat is nine. In the last month or so she’s been sick three times, which is really unusual for her. She’s not at all bothered and immediately after is straight to her food bowl begging for treats, absolutely fine in herself. She was sick this morning after eating breakfast, and is now campaigning for lunch.

We’ve booked her into the vet - the first appointment was Wednesday. I’m worried! She’s generally very greedy so I do wonder if she is just horsing her food too fast, but she was sick on Saturday night, fine yesterday, then sick today, so off she goes. Anyone got any ideas? I’m frightened that at her age it could be her kidneys?

Definitely recommend it sizing the food bowl and it helps them not gulp air with their food.

We've literally just experienced this with DCat, 13. Turned into the exorcist. £400 quid and loads of "try this" later (had bloods checked as well as general check up), turns out the poor sod was rammed with furballs. Grim. So now she's on cat malt and we've bought a furminator. I was shocked at how much she's clearly shedding and was ingesting/not clearing as her grooming got less efficient. We're now vigilant with helping her to groom and we've had no barfing since. Good luck

Ours did this took him to the vets all sorts of tests fine. Just ate his food too quickly, rescue cats can get obsessed with food. So much better now he has his dishes raised up. Started by just putting them on a small cake tin. He now has a posh raised dish.

That was supposed to say raise the food bowl

Ooft @Falifornia - ours is very hairy for a short haired cat so I have been grooming her daily since Monday. We will definitely look at raising bowls too, great tip.

I am a naturally anxious person, but in reality she speed-ate a load of biscuits, puked, about five weeks later was sick again after coming in from being outside, then two days later wolfed her breakfast, then threw it up. Each time she was completely unbothered and has had no other “off” signs, physically or behaviourally. We’re keeping an eye on her though 👀.

She’s ready to post if anyone wants a greedy, hairy cat?

My cat threw up less when I got her a raised bowl, sort of at an angle?

Might be worth a try as it changes the cats eating posture

She was sick again this morning and today does seem “off colour/not herself”. I’m bringing her to the vet at 4.

Just updating in case anyone is interested. By the time we went to the vet she was, of course, fine. The vet did a thorough physical and was happy with her, but suggested she have an injection which was both an anti-nausea thing plus can be a diagnostic tool - if she’s sick again in the next 24h we’ve to bring her back for further investigations. We’ve also to give her a worming tablet tomorrow.

Vet said to feed her small meals tonight so I have poached some chicken and have just given her little bits of that which she gobbled up. She is currently sitting in front of “her cupboard” looking mournful.

Just checked to see if your puss was okay. Was she sick anymore after the vet visit or is she just having you on to get more attention and fresh chicken? My foster boy has been chucking up hairballs all week. He doesn't like being groomed, although we are working on that, so every time I go past him, or if he's sitting on my knee, I use damp hands to get as much loose hair off him as I can which made me think of you! 😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/06/2023 09:36

@HappyCatty she's been absolutely fine, thank goodness. Yesterday we gave her small meals of cat food mixed in with poached chicken throughout the day. I did poach another chicken breast last night but forgot about it in the morning rush so she had her Sheba as normal, and then tried to steal my breakfast. DP's at home today so can keep an eye on her. We didn't do the worming tablet yesterday but I have left it propped up against the kettle for him to remember!

Have you tried one of those mitt/gloves things with your boy? Ours loves a brush but we do have one of those too and it works really well, and the lifting off of a hand-shaped pack of hair is very satisfying!

Aw, that's good news! Little monkey! Hope she stays well.

Yes, have a glove and a Zoom Groom (which most of my fosters have loved and is the best tool ever!), but this little guy has had a hard life and is very untrusting of anything but hands near him. He'll get used to it, slowly but surely, but for now, it's damp hands and hairball hoicking! 😂What we do for our Masters (and Mistresses! 😉)!
