How to keep kitten indoors over summer

We have a kitten born 14/2 so now nearly 4 months old. He’s perfect and very feisty. He will be allowed outdoors when he is chipped and neutered which I was planning for about 4 months as per Google advice.
At his 2nd vaccination the vet said his testicles are very small so not to bring him back until August! We settled on a check up mid July to see if he’s grown enough.
Anyway. Meanwhile he is so desperate to get outside. He has plenty of toys and play and the run of the house but we have to make sure windows and doors are only open a crack or he will try and get out.
doesn’t help that we back on to a little wooded area which is infested with squirrels who literally come up to the patio doors to taunt him!
We bought a harness and leash and he’s been out a couple of times as I want him to not freak out and run off the first time he is free. He just wants to run into the woods.
He has escaped twice when people have briefly opened a door. He once went under my car at the front and once got into the neighbours garden and she scooped him up.
How do I keep him in? Do I have to have all doors and windows shut until August? Keep Mr Smallballs locked in a bedroom when I leave the house? How did you all do it? If yours got out did he come back?

Thanks for any advice

Find another vet that will neuter him. Our 'kittens' were done by the rescue at 9 weeks, so I'm pretty sure at four months it really shouldn't be a problem.

Yup, different vet.

I'm guessing there's no way to kitten-proof your garden so he can't get out of it? Mine also isn't neutered yet (vet wants to wait until 6 months) but I take him in the garden. He isn't big enough to jump the fence and get out - we also back onto woodland with lots of mice and bunnies.

Different vet!! It can be done from 2kg at most vets, with some doing them even smaller!

This is a database showing vets that neuter earlier than 6 months. I used an alternative vet for my 2 boys as my vet wanted to wait until 6 months whereas 4 months is recommended

Thanks all! Yes I didn’t take to the vet. He was quite rough and uncommunicative and just said ‘bring him back in August’. Wasn’t interested in all my questions.
I have signed up to a package so would rather stick with them but I think I’ll take him back in mid July when he’s 5 months.
No I can’t kitten proof. There’s just a tiny open fence onto a path. It’s the dashing out when he hears the door go!
I will persevere for another month then take him back. There is a lovely woman vet there too. Will try and wangle seeing her instead. Wish me luck and thanks again for replies

Change vet! You can definitely get him neutered.

but even so he will very young to go out - you can use "cat in a flat" screens for windows and doors but otherwise it really is a case of supervision and not letting him slip out.

All of my neutered indoor cats have got out at some point - two we had to go and find in neighbours gardens but the other came back of his own accord!

dentedpixie I really appreciate the link. There is a vet I can try next month which is only 5 miles away if mine is still being cautious.
Wish I hadn’t committed to this vet practice but I am now paying for a year for a whole package so with one more go.

Thanks I actually have screens on the patio doors so I thought that would sort it but he dug under it!
