Collecting kitten - what do I need?

Used to have cats over 10 years ago now have dogs. My neighbours cat had unexpected kittens ( rescue didn't realise she was pregnant) so they asked if we'd like one. Been round they are gorgeous friendly kittens.
We can collect him this weekend.
What do we need?
Carrier
Food - currently on whiskers wet/dry
Bowls
Bed
???

Also we need to slowly introduce him to our dogs. Any advice? We're going to keep him upstairs and the dogs downstairs to start.

Jumping on as we are collecting a kitten in a few weeks!
how much do the initial vaccinations, fleaing and worming cost?
I’ve seen a price for the neutering of around £80-£100 but does that include aftercare and the check up the following week??

Muffintopjeans · 07/06/2023 20:47

Our downstairs is completely open plan, do you think that would be too overwhelming for a kitten to get used to for the first few days?

Can I interrupt this thread with all you experienced people on to ask for litter training advice. He is unbelievably cute (see photo) but doesn't seem to know what to do in the litter tray. He poos on the same sofa cushion all the time though. Should we put the litter tray there?

@drwitch, that kitten looks far too small to have been taken from his mother. Do you have a small space in which to confine the kitten, leaving food and a litter tray in it for him?

I think you will have to be vigilant and to watch like a hawk and lift into the litter tray when he shows any sign of going. I might put the cushion next to the tray as it is now scented.

Where did you get the kitten from because a good breeder or rescue should have dealt with this? How old is the kitten? May I gently suggest you have the kitten vetchecked ASAP and DO NOT use any spot on treatments until your vet says he's old enough and follow your vet's advice about what to use specifically for tiny kittens.

We had a crate for our kitten to go into at night for the first couple of weeks whilst she was so tiny so she couldn't get up to too much trouble. However, she did manage to find a small hole in it and get inside the sofa on the first night! Once I repaired the hole no issues

Do not underestimate the tiny spaces they can get into. Block everything!

Also we have a dog & it was fine with the kitten. Tbh the kitten hid for the first couple of days. Of course we had to introduce them slowly so the dog didn't chase but now they are best mates. The kitten loves the dog so much....when he comes down in the morning she rubs up against him to say hello. When we came back from a weeks holiday she was so happy to see him. It's really cute.

If there is the option of two littermate I would 100% recommend. I have had single kittens and pairs and would always get a pair. They are so much easier. They entertain each other which helps keep them off your curtains and give each other more confidence (which helps when you have dogs in the house).

zooplus do good-priced decent cat food (look at grain-free, cats don’t need rice etc - the higher meat content the better) and cat trees etc.

Keep kitten contained away from dogs when you're not there, and at night. Distant acquaintances new kitten was killed by her 2 dogs overnight, as she left them all together despite being told not to. Keep them apart when unsupervised till Kitten is big enough to get up high quickly.

Yes he is very small, only just over 8 weeks. But he is settling with is very well. We take it in turns to sleep downstairs and keep him in one room. Vet said to wait for a few days to get hine checked. We moved the tray near the cushion and that seems to have worked

Thank you

Get a box of cat biscuits and put them in a tin with lots of room so when you shake them they make a decent amount of noise.

He’s too young to eat them now but every time you feed him shake the biscuits. He will associate this sound with being fed. Then when he’s older and you are wondering where the fuck he’s got to you just shake the biscuits and he’s there in seconds.

Shut the door and leave him be.

Hello little boy Smile

Have you got a name for him yet?

(My gingercat name would be Helios which means SunGod)

Don't change food or litter yet - he needs to settle in first and lots of changes will just result in a really upset tummy.

When you do change his diet it needs to be done gradually for the same reasons.

I would also recommend two kittens though - they do a million times better in pairs and your ankles won't get as shredded Grin

This. Adopting in pairs is best.

Awww he's gorgeous .
Cats are SO good at WFH , we have two adult bro/sis black cats . The female sits with DH when he WFH and sashays in front of the camera every now and then (in a supervisory capacity of course)

It's when they make an assualt on the keyboard you need to send them offside Grin

I remember being on a Teams call and an arsehole colleague had a go at me in front of a customer for something that clearly wasn't my fault. It was very difficult to take him seriously though when I looked at the preview and could see Harry in the background, leg in the air having a good old wash!
