Cat open wound

9 year old cat had her booster 2 weeks ago and also on antibiotics and painkillers for bad gingivitis and they took blood from
her too.

Back of her neck last week a raw piece of skin think from cat fight. Took photo and sent to vet who said bathe with salt water. I’m seeing vet next Wednesday when antibiotics finish. Cat scratched over the scab which was nicely forming last night. Question now, should I just keep bathing the wound? Thinking of ringing vet before lunchtime.

Maybe send another picture and ask.

In my experience cat bites can get infected easily, but as the cat is already on antibiotics that may have helped.

If you are worried and not sure it’s probably best to ask the vet again.

That’s good. I’ll email them now. Bloody cat itched and scratched it off last night whilst my back was turned!

That’s the thing it was red raw but after they saw the photo they said it should be ok keep bathing it which I did but now the scab is off and it’s pink red raw again.

As bites form abscesses really easily, it's normally a good thing when the scabs come off, as the cleaning with the antibiotics give a way for infection to come out. I've had to remove a scab daily as part of treating an abscess.

Are you stroking up from under her chin/ chest /shoulders to bring any pus up towards the exit point when you're cleaning?

I remember years ago coming back after a couple of nights away, to find my cat had a lump on his head. It wasn’t open and he didn’t seem bothered by it at all. As it was Sunday night I decided I would make a vet appointment first thing in the morning.

I was on the phone when my cat appeared and shook himself and blood and pus flew from his head onto the walls and carpet.

The vet squeezed the abscess to get the pus out and prescribed the usual medication. I was just about to leave when the vet decided to give the abscess another squeeze. My cat freaked out and “attacked” the vet and ended up being that cartoon cat with all four legs star shaped and attached to the front of the vets shirt. I believe blood was drawn.

Thankfully the cat was fine with me when I got home and let him out of the carrier. But he went straight out of the cat flap. Lovely summers day for him I thought, until I noticed flies all around his head and zoning in on the abscess site.

I panicked and convinced myself that that flies might lay their eggs there and next thing there would be maggots. Is that even possible? Cue grumpy cat stuck indoors.

One of my cats is prone to abscess, so I always bathe anything in salty warm water til I take him to the vets
Good luck
