Cleaning throws with cat fur

I've got a squeegee and I've used one of those rubber brooms to gather cat fur before discarding the blob, but unless I can hold it taut, it's harder on blankets and throws.

What do you do before putting things like blakers or throws in the washing machine? I don't want to risk blocking the filter in the washing machine.

Thanks in advance.

I usually shake it out and chuck it in the machine with a dissolver sachet. Sometimes I just use a clothes brush - we have various types for animal fur!

You can buy these cheaper on B&M or Wilkinsons etc.

Try a thick rubber glove and just rub your hand over it all, works a treat!

I put them in the tumble drier for the 10 minute bit at the end of a cycle when there's no heat.

I put them in the tumble drier for the 10 minute bit at the end of a cycle when there's no heat.

This - the static charge causes the fur to separate from the fabric.

Tumble quickly on cool, then chuck them in the wash, no fabric softener, then tumble again once they're dry.

Works perfectly for all fabrics, including fleeces, blankets and fake fur.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I shall put rubber gloves and pet hair dissolver on the shopping list.

That's very helpful @PinkFootstool . I didn't know such things existed!

Sadly no tumble dryer here.

I use either a wet squeeze cloth to wipe off the cat fur OR I vacuum it off with my Miele Pet Hair vacuum cleaner.

Pic of my floofy cat included.

I hang them on the line to make them easier to brush/hand vacuum.

Yarnysaura · 29/05/2023 19:50

I hoover cat beds and blankets before washing.

Clarich007 · 02/06/2023 19:56

You can buy fabric bags to put the throws and blankets in before you wash them. I got mine from Amazon, and they really work. The bags retain the fur

bellac11 · 02/06/2023 19:59

Either hang on the line and hoover with attachments on a low setting so you dont swallow the whole thing up, or stand on them strategically so your feet hold them taut while you hoover, again on a slightly lower setting so it doesnt snaffle the whole blanket up the hoover
