Neglected local cat - should I get involved?

There's a very sweet tom who regularly visits our garden. A month ago he turned up with a horrible injury to his leg. Because we assumed he was a stray, a neighbour and I took the cat to an emergency vet. He was scanned: no chip. They gave him pain relief and antibiotics, and cleaned up the wound. However, they couldn't x ray him as too expensive without insurance. My neighbour kept him overnight while we tried to figure out what to do. Among other things, he is not neutered.

The neighbour then found the owners through facebook. There was a happy reunion, and the neighbours promised to get him checked out. We saw no more of him until this morning.

His leg is misshapen and he is still limping. They have not had him neutered. I am so distressed at the neglect. I have asked the neighbour what to do - whether we should call the RSPCA, but apart from agreeing that the cat's owners are shite, he's suddenly gone quiet.

We live in a rough neighbourhood. I would seriously wonder that if I got involved with this, the cat's owners might turn nasty. But seeing the poor mite in such discomfort is heartbreaking. I am so angry about the owners.

Any advice or similar experiences?

Please take him to a rescue, and they can deal with the owners if and when they turn up to claim their cat. Don't let him suffer.

Try the Cats Protection League for advice. They are more proactive than the RSPCA when it comes to strays.

Or a small local rescue. CP were no help
When I found Len last year.

It isn’t actual neglect not to neuter cats (unfortunately). It maybe that they have taken him to the vets and he is recovering. What is it that makes you convinced he is being neglected?

It's lovely you're looking out for him. I couldn't ignore it either. You can find your local independent rescues here:

See what they say?

We took him to a PDSA vet and he's been taken for adoption. I really hope his leg heals and he gets a kind new human who looks after him properly.

This was one of the most stressful animal related things I've had to do.

Thank you alabastercodefier - you did the right thing and I'm sorry it was stressful, but you've given him a much better chance in life.

GardeningIdiot · 04/07/2023 21:32

Bless you, @alabastercodefier. It is stressful. He'll hopefully have a whole new life now.

You did the right thing, they’re scum.

You're a wonderful person. Wish there were more people like you. Thank you for caring for this poor soul 😘
