How do I stop the cat ripping up the carpet?

I've owned cats for decades. But this one is driving me potty.

She scratches at the carpet outside the bathroom door every time I go in there.
Tonight she pulled it up so much that I couldn't get out as it was blocking the door.

How can I deter her?
If im in the house alone I just leave the door open, but I can't do that with a house full of people.
Is there anything I can spray to.stop.her?

She has several scratching posts around the house, this isn't a desire.to scratch, it's a desire to be in the room with me. If I leave the door open She comes in, looks around, and goes straight out again.

She doesn't follow me anywhere else, just to the toilet!!

Now this is something I need to follow. My fucker of a cat is doing the same thing. She’s completely destroyed it at my bedroom door.

We’ve found removing the scent (the paws have a gland that contain scent) helps deter her for a little while.

My dh sprayed dettol down and for a few weeks, she left the spot alone. She’s started to go back so we will spray it again and see if it works.

Would be handy though if someone had a better solution

You can get safe cat repellent sprays (I think they’re citrus based) which apparently they hate. I’d try that.

Otherwise you’ll have to do what I did and have a cat on your lap everytime you need the loo 😅

Cat flap in door?

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 27/05/2023 06:35

No doors are ever closed in our house for this reason. Bloody cats.

Cheekyfuckerseverywhere · 27/05/2023 07:44

Take her with you every time. You can’t scratch to get in if your already inside.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 27/05/2023 07:51

Mine do the same, bathroom and bedroom. They also do the edge of the stairs, but that's just for fun rather than trying to get to me.
I have intermittent success with taping foil to the floor and double sided tape on the edge of the stairs. They usually figure out how to remove said barriers, but each time I replace them it does stop them.
It's not like they really want to be with me, they just hate not being able to. If the bathroom door was not properly shut, they will come in but totally ignore me and head for the bath instead.

I use a doorstop to prop the door open just wide enough for the cat to slip in and out, but not wide enough so I am on show to others in the house.

Love our two to bits, they are the friendliest and most loving cats....but, they have ruined our carpets doing this, not helped by teenagers refusing to get up and open their doors!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/05/2023 08:26

Our cats are slowly destroying our stair carpet by scratching. They've got the most amazing and expensive.scratching post but no, it's the sodding stairs carpet. I don't know what to do, ot drives me mad.

Cardboard cat scratchers were the game-changer for us. Our cat ignored every other type of scratching post (including carpet ones, oddly!) but the cardboard ones were an instant hit. They come with a sachet of catnip to sprinkle on, to get their interest. I put my cat on the scratcher and "demonstrated" it with their paw. Never had a scratched carpet since.

Cardboard scratchers are relatively inexpensive (I paid around £12) and usually reversible so you get two sides to use. A side lasts a very long time though even with a lot of use. The ones with a slight incline are the favourite.

HeartStarRose · 27/05/2023 08:29

^my post more relevant to general scratchers, but you could put the scratcher outside the bathroom door?

Emmamoo89 · 27/05/2023 08:35

Use cat tape. It's great 😊

ThisJenistheInternet · 27/05/2023 08:39

I bought some of that plastic roll with treads in it for hallways (much like my Mrs Bouquet type Grab put down when tradespeople came round) and cut pieces to put in doorways. It was the only thing that worked, and my cat getting old and less bothered about being with me.

You need to think of your cat as your daemon - wherever you are your cat needs to be. But with the option to swan off at any time after breakfast, of course.

Orangelover · 27/05/2023 09:57

My cat does this! He goes mental on the carpet outside our bedroom door if we shut it. He just wants to be in bed with us and of course we've just relented and let him like the weak slaves that we are Blush

Sorry OP no advice I'm afraid.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/05/2023 10:16

Unfortunately, telling a cat 'This is not a communal activity - I leave you alone when you're in your tray, you need to leave me alone whilst I'm using mine' doesn't tend to get more than a gormless look because it's obviously different.

Let her in, shut the door, do what you've got to do, open the door. She's only leaving because you've made it possible - as soon as she knows you'll close the door behind her, she'll probably decide that it isn't that vital to share these moments with you. And if she's still being a pest, perhaps you could take the opportunity to give her a quick bath - that guarantees cat-free peeing for at least 3 months.

Put a heavy coir doormat outside the bathroom, will look weird but might work.

Ooo this is a good idea actually.

I would have to more it every time I need to open the door but it would be a good fix for a temporary thing

Orange or peppermints scented spray on the carpet
