My parents need a teacher for their cat and have been told that an apple air tag, in a special collar is the best? Pics of the beast.

Tracker, not teacher!

Beautiful cat :)

CurlsLDN · 24/05/2023 12:25

Yes I’ve heard air tag is good, but only works if they have iPhones.
if they don’t, look at Chipolo, that’s what I use for my cat + android phone

Clarista · 24/05/2023 12:28

I have one, works very well for peace of mind but not if they are looking to be able to know where he is at all times.

Basically it will update his location if he’s within 30 feet of their phones, or other peoples apple devices if lost mode is turned on- I leave this on all the time as it allows his location to ping and update.

I keep an eye on it and it will constantly update to say ‘home 5 minutes ago’ or whatever when he wonders by. If he’s been gone a while I go for a little walk and his location updates.

It also allows you to track him directly if he’s within 30 feet.

I bought a tracker collar on Amazon. It’s very light and doesn’t bother him. Would defo recommend!

I use AirTags my bikes and I can certainly see where my bikes are. I have an iPhone

I won’t put collars on my cats. They put cats at a real risk of injury or even death.

LostCats · 24/05/2023 13:43

I’ll be honest Toddler, I was extremely interested to see how a teacher in a collar would work. Given my youngest cat’s predilection for naughtiness I was very keen to know

LacewingOrpington · 24/05/2023 13:45

It’s a lot of weight to make your cat carry round their neck. I also agree with pp, I think collars are a terrible dangerous idea on cats.

We have a quick release collar that comes undone if it's tugged. It's quite annoying when you're trying to catch the cat and can only get the collar as that's all you end up with, but I don't worry about it getting caught on anything.

amylou8 · 24/05/2023 14:01

I don't have them on the cats as I don't like them wearing collars, but I have an airtag on pretty much everything else I can misplace, including the car. As long as you're in an area with lots of people they work great. They track off any iPhone they come close to and are really accurate.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2023 14:02

He's always worn a collar. So that's not the issue. @LostCats my mum was a teacher for 35 years. It doesn't seem to have had the slightest effect on his Lordship.

Any other recommendations for trackers?

I couldn't find a tracker that would suit a free range cat. Shame-because I would love to know where my wanderer goes!

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2023 14:04

My parents are moving house and he will temporarily be moving in with my sister as their house isn't ready. So they just want some extra reassurance if he does escape. They adopted him after being told he was an indoor cat. He is not!

@amylou8 I was about to ask how you would loose your car. However I just remembered the time I misplaced mine in Coventry. Confused

Shaking a Dreamies packet would work for 30 feet!

GloriousintheArctic · 24/05/2023 14:07

Look for a collar advertised as 'snap free' or 'breakaway', and make sure it's fitted properly (not too tight, not too loose, you should be able to slip your finger between cat's neck and collar). I've had many cats in the past 30 years who have all worn snap free collars and there has never been a problem - the collar simply breaks if it gets caught up on something.

My cats used to wear trackers (Locat8or), they were really useful as it let you track them over a fair distance - at least 100 yards, further if there were no buildings in he way. It helped me many times when a cat was shut in a shed etc. The tracker was smaller than an airtag though, I'm not sure if they would tolerate that - would depend on the cat.

MonumentalLentil · 24/05/2023 14:15

I use safety collars when one is needed, judging by the amount that got lost when we lived out in the wilds they work very well. Always test them first to check they snap open.

I have indoor cats now so have only used them when moving house in case of escape and loss.

Neighbour has an airtag on her boy, it seems heavy but then so is he and he jingles. He did go missing a while back and was lucky to be found and returned so they don't take chances now.

Wolfiefan · 24/05/2023 14:22

@booksandbrooks the mechanism can fail. Cats get a front leg caught through it and can even need amputation. Plus the risk of them being trapped or hung. We used to use beastie bands but wouldn’t use a normal colar.

meikyo · 24/05/2023 14:22

Pettracer are brilliant. I have three cats and they all have one. Very accurate tracking. Collars are approx 35g and have snap free safety catches.

afaloren · 24/05/2023 14:45

I wish I could get mine to wear a tracker but if I use the safety collars - which I always did when I was using collars - they just come home without them!

I wish someone would come up with a way to track them through their microchips.

I was once convinced someone was removing my cats collar as some sort of protest of them wearing it, I couldn’t figure out how as she doesn’t like to be picked up. I kept buying new ones, and name tags, and she kept coming home without them.
When we trimmed the hedge we found, all on the same branch, a little collection of her collars. Quick release really do work!

BigShoutyRaven · 24/05/2023 15:06

Tractive - cheap second hand on ebay as the real cost is the monthly or annual fee on the chip, which is basically a sim that you can GPS track and call.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2023 15:15

@SiegeOfBees Mithril is a frequent looser of collars! They get posted through the front door. Much to his disgust! Cheddar has only just had a new one after 5 years!
