Fat cat help

My Tom cat (7) has been steadily piling on the weight for a couple of years and we need to do something about it. We have two issues:

  1. He's very lazy - not interested in toys, he's indoor, so doesn't do much exercise
  2. He's super greedy and bullies food off our other cat. Because of the layout at home it's pretty much impossible to feed them separately

Any tips or experience? Also how much dry food would you feed him in grams? And can anyone recommend a good brand of indoor cat food that will keep him satisfied but not make him any fatter?!

ok this is a little pricey ,but you may get lucky finding one secondhand .This bowl only opens for one specific pet

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sure-Petcare-MPF001-SureFeed-Microchip/dp/B00O0UIPTY/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2HC33EI0SXR7D&keywords=microchip%2Bcat%2Bbowl&qid=1684831698&sprefix=microchip%2Bcat%2Bbowl%2Caps%2C78&sr=8-5&th=1

or

get one of these and attach to bathroom door ,lock other cats food in bathroom

https://www.amazon.co.uk/PetSafe-Staywell-Magnetic-Selective-Locking/dp/B00IAOB4VC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2KT65ADI2PSG5&keywords=magnet+cat+flap&qid=1684831819&sprefix=magent+cat+flap%2Caps%2C104&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

Then you can strictly manage the over weight ones intake ,go for something grain free they tend to be healthier.I use zooplus porta 21 a good one

Ooh thank you for the recommendations! Unfortunately we can't feed separately in the bathroom cos it's a folding door which doesn't lock and both of them can open it. I'll look into the feeder and the food though!

As an experienced fat cat owner (and fat person) he is lazy because he is fat. If he was less fat he might not be the most energetic of cats but he would move more than he does now.

Step 1: Stop the bullying. If you can't feed separately then feed the other cats with a microchip feeder so he can't eat their food. Silkycat was devastated when the microchip feeder arrived and basically started losing weight overnight, turned out she was having multiple dinners.

Step 2: Up the exercise. Make him work for his food by using a slow feeder, hiding it in treat balls, chucking dry food across the room. Have a look on Jackson Galaxy on how to play with your cats - I thought mine didn't play, turns out I was just rubbish at playing with them

Step 3: Address what you feed him. I have variously got cats to lose weight by feeding a satiety cat food or grain-free cat food. Both methods work but grain-free would be my preference as they are fuller for longer. No treats, no ad lib kibble and weigh your portion every day - I found I thought I knew what a handful was but it got bigger over time when I wasn't weighing it.

Good luck!

Similar situation with boy cat eating girl cats food. The automatic feeder has been a godsend not least because she is a grazer but he would see any left over food as his. The second thing we did was to get the Metabolic food and get an accurate measure/scoop so we didn't have to guess. Both things together worked well. He's still lazy and could sleep for England, but there is less of him to love now.

These are really great tips everyone, thank you so much! I've ordered some grain free food and I'll look into the separate feeder for the little one

remember to change food gradually or they get runny tummy.Add a little new to old gradually switching it out over a week or two
