Boy cat or girl cat?

My most beautiful and loved baby girl left us just over a month ago. We are looking to get another cat and have been looking for another girl.

I’m looking for a girl because my mum preferred girls as she felt that boys tended to wander off more.
All the boy cats I had as a child (we had a lot of cats) tended to be wanders but they also were farm cats rather than regular domestic cats.

Is there any truth in the idea that boys wander? Does it make that much of a difference?

They wander if not neutered. If they are neutered, they don’t have the drive to wander. My boy cats have all been home-lovers and very lazy.

No neutered boy cats will have a huge territory. Neutered boy cats are proper snuggle bunnies.

Sorry, I should have said neutered. I wouldn’t entertain unneutered.

You never can tell but I have never found neutered males to be wanderers they tend to be fairly lazy and cuddly. I currently have 3 cats (all indoor due to health issues) the boy is by far the most affectionate.

Boys won't wander so long as you have them castrated. Both my boys have been affectionate softies, without the occasional stroppiness I have seen in my girls.

Personally I would keep an open mind and be open to either - the right cat will find you!

Boy cat definately, we have both and our boy is more affectionate and really good with the kids, he sleeps with DS1. Our girl cat is my cat, she barely tolerates everyone else.

Oh and I don't know if this is to do with her sex or her personality in general but my boy has been much less fussy about food and litter brands, he eats and poops on whatever I buy for him to eat or poop on!

I've lived with and had literally dozens of cats and I've found absolutely no difference. They're all individuals.

My one boy cat was the most loving of all the cats I’ve had.

Our neutered male has a reasonably large wandering radius BUT he doesn't stay out that long, he'll do a quick patrol maybe twice a day. He is a lazy little twat though.

I lost two young (neutered) males cats in the space of two years, they both got run over, we don’t live on a main road, but they both sought it out.

My “survivor” cat, neutered female, had the same opportunities but thankfully either never headed to the main road, or at least had some road sense.

My lovely girl is now 14, and sadly I know she won’t be with us forever, but in the future I would tend towards a female cat?

MrsRickAstley · 05/05/2023 18:41

I've had both and my boy cat is much more the affectionate.

evilharpy · 05/05/2023 18:45

I've only ever had one (neutered) male cat so have nothing to compare this to, but mine could barely even be arsed to go outside let alone go wandering off. His sister was far more adventurous.

ArcticBells · 05/05/2023 19:16

I've had 4 cats of both sexes and I honestly think it depends on the personality of the individual cat.
