Help me choose kittens!

I've just been to look at a litter of 6 kittens... but can't choose which 2 to adopt. Help me choose.

The first 2-3 I met were super inquisitive, friendly, purred a lot, all round adorable. But very fluffy and so I'm worried about all the hair, matted coats, poo sticking to their fur.

The other short haired cats were hiding, wouldn't let me stroke them, seemed timid. But looked gorgeous.

Would you go for personality or practicality (hoping their personalities develop)?

I wish I could take them all.

Take the outgoing ones! You can get around the fur issues by brushing them and cutting away areas that get matted.

I agree! If they're already curious and outgoing they're likely to stay that way. I've had cats that hid and seemed very timid when we went to view and they're still timid years later. It can be hard when they constantly hide, run away from people and don't really like affection. Just get them used to being brushed right from young!

I must admit to a short hair preference (have had both) and I have always gone for the slightly odd ones, so timid etc as I’ve had to rehab a lot of strays in the past and I like the “broken” ones.

That said we are looking again soon and now have DD in the mix, so we will need confident kitties to go with a 4 year old.

So it all depends on your set up.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/05/2023 13:37

Go for the fluffy outgoing ones and buy a brush.
If you feel guilty about it take one of the shy ones as well. Having 3 kittens works as well as 2.

Thank you all. You've confirmed what was in my head too. I was being swayed by what other relatives thought based on looks/practicality but personality/temperament is what's important. Especially with kids!

No’s 2 & 6.

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 13:51

2 and 6, they look like they have attitude

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 13:53

Maybe get 4 as well
DCat was timid. Timid no more, I can assure you. Smile

midsomermurderess · 03/05/2023 13:54

2 and 4 are really cute.

MyGrandmaLizzie · 03/05/2023 14:03

Choose the most confident and outgoing kittens, not the shy or scared ones.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/05/2023 14:05

Have one shy and one out going!

OdeToBarney · 03/05/2023 14:10

Please take the black one, they always get left behind. I'd get one of each, hopefully the outgoing one will bring the other out of it's shell. Are they all litter mates?

This, outgoing and shy are a perfect combo

2chocolateoranges · 03/05/2023 14:12

I’d go for the two middle ones. They are gorgeous!

Time40 · 03/05/2023 14:34

I’d go for the two middle ones. They are gorgeous!

So would I - especially the middle-row one on the right.

TokyoSushi · 03/05/2023 14:39

Oh my! Middle and bottom left for me!

Usernamesarenoteasy · 03/05/2023 14:56

ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or I'll take the top right and bottom left for you

Beamur · 03/05/2023 14:56

Top left and middle left. Especially if they're male.
I would get 2 boys.
I have 3 girls....love them but 😂

I always take the black ones, most of my cats have been black. I can’t understand why they get left, so sad.

WotNoUserName · 03/05/2023 15:04

All the kittens!

Or take 2, send me the rest. Grin

steppemum · 03/05/2023 15:06

don't worry about fluff.
I have a fluffy cat, he pretty much sorts his own hair. Only a few occasions when I have had to intervene.
But i am talking about normal moggy fluff, not proper long haired.

My mum did have a long haired moggy, and he did get matts under the arms. It took him a while ot learn to cope with his coat.

I would also be considering the boy/girl combos?
Girls cost a lot more to neuter.
I'd probably go for one boy and one girl (and then be very timely with neutering.

Same! Black or black and white boys. They have such a lovely temperament 🥰

2chocolateoranges · 03/05/2023 16:07

We have a long haired cat with a tail like a fox. She didn’t look like that when we chose her. She was tiny with short hair but as she’s grown she has forgot fluffier and fluffier, a good pet hoover is a must .

ReviewingTheSituation · 03/05/2023 16:11

They're all so different!

I'd go for short haired, but then I'm not keen on long haired cats. Their personalities change when they grow up and when they're in new environments. A timid kitten may well come into their own when they are lord and master of their own space. Plus timid cats may be more loving than a full on extrovert. I don't think you can tell much about their long term temperament at this age.
