My cat being bullied by neighbour cat

We got our cat 6 months ago from a rescue, she's around 4 years old. She's settled in lovely, loves going outside, generally let her out into back garden but she hops the fence to go out the front. It's pretty safe outside for her she mostly stays on our front door step.
Anyway there is a big grey cat from across the road that she has had a fight with 3 times, the first time I was trying to call her in and saw this grey cat on our drive walking slowly closer to her, luckily I filmed it on my phone so I could watch it back, the grey cat went for ours. It's happened twice more since, always on our driveway. What is the best thing to do. Should I/DH knock on the door where we believe it lives to chat to the owner? Realistically what could they do though? I feel worried about ours going out and potentially being attacked and hurt

Unfortunately they're not likely to do much: their cat is as much allowed to go out as yours is and unless they're mega friendly and accommodating I can't see them supervising their cat's outdoor time to stop any fights happening. We've got the same issue with ours and a big fluffy bastard that lives behind us - I've sprayed it with a (gentle!!!) water pistol every time I've spotted it in our garden in the hopes it'll stop it coming round as often but really there's not loads we can do, I just go out and intervene where I can.

I also have the same problem. I got 3 cats. One kittie who is now 7 months so goes out. Our bak is very safe and they never get out the front.

However there is a black git who bullies our cats. All 3 of them. It hurt our big boys and had to take vets

Again nothing we can do. The people, our neighbours, are so lovely and they feel really bad. But you can do nothing. Cats will be cats I'm afraid. We are doin the water thing and clapping hands when we hear them. It comes in our garden and on occasion cat flap!

That's what I thought, I said to DH if it was the other way round what realistically could we do, bar keeping her in but she wouldn't be happy stuck inside. It's just a shame it's coming to our property to fight with her, why can't it stay away 😟

Very little you can do. Perhaps keep her in your back garden and cat proof it, then she has her own space

We are inundated with cats in our garden at the moment , so our one is not going out as much as usual . I have a horrible feeling that a neighbours female cat hasn’t been neutered as there are a heck of a lot of males hanging around the poor thing and not the usual ones we see so coming from further away, the males are fighting daily , and our little lad is half the size of most of them . Some people really shouldn’t have pets ( those who don’t neuter , it effects the whole neighbourhood not just their poor cats ).

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 02/05/2023 18:56

I think we need to normalise cat proofing too, you can diy it and your cats safe from fighting, dogs, cars, batshit neighbours et al.

DaftDeafDuck · 02/05/2023 19:05

Same problem here, there's been a big increase in the numbers of cats in the neighbourhood in the last year. To compound things our rescue baby hasn't got a tail which I think reduces her range of communications, meaning she gets picked on more 😞

RavenT · 02/05/2023 19:19

Same problem here. My poor rescue had 4 tail abcesses last year due to another cat on the road who was attacking him in our garden. Thankfully that little bastard has moved.

Now we just have the black cat from 2 doors down that chases our cat into the cat flap and hisses at him.

It's really frustrating but not a lot we can do. I always bring Fred in at night so he's not out when the bullies are really wild!

RedSquirrelRoar · 02/05/2023 19:36

It’s horrible when they fight, isn’t it? Ours has gone through phases of fighting with local cats that try to come into our garden. I hate seeing her upset or hurt but we’ve found it’s best not to keep her in (unless she’s injured) or it just prolongs the situation.
Ours always seems to come off worse in fights but she’s so bloody-minded that after a while the other cat decides it’s not worth the bother!

Aaron95 · 02/05/2023 19:47

Cats are territorial. Nothing you can do to restrict them from roaming wherever they like. They will either sort out the pecking order and just glare at each other, or your cat will learn to avoid the other cat.

Have you got a cat flap which has a chop sensor? If your cat can use it to escape to safety it will soon learn this and be OK.

ApocalypseNowt · 02/05/2023 20:30

It might get better if they sort out who is boss.

All our neighborhood cats are mostly settled in the pecking order but it all goes to hell if a new cat ventures in!

My small feisty cat likes to try and pick fights with other cats then runs behind our other very large cat & expects him to finish the fight for her 🤣 Luckily as he's such a massive unit the other cats usually slink off without an actual fight.

Pineapplestropical · 20/06/2023 22:54

We had this when our new cat started going out in the back garden. The 2 cats from the house opposite kept fighting her and she was ever so scared. Then one day few months later suddenly our cat started chasing them out of our garden and now we hardly ever see them at all. So it may be that once your cat marks his or her territory as your back garden things will calm down. I don't know if it was a coincidence but the reduced flights also coincided with ours using the toilet a lot more outside so possibly marking her space and keeping other cats away?
