Cat has eaten tulip leaf - is it an emergency?

My cat has just nibbled a small part of a tulip leaf. I stopped her as soon as I saw but she has eaten a tiny bit. A quick google has come up with lots of horror stories saying I need to take her to the vet immediately and it could be fatal. Is this really true? It’s my daughter’s birthday and I have my hands quite full so don’t want to over react…

Ring the vet a nurse will answer don’t delay.

The vet just said to ring the animal poison line who will charge £45 just for the phone call! Surely outdoor cats must do this sort of thing all the time but you wouldn’t know! Not sure what to do.

All bulbs are poisonous. You’re taking a gamble here.

It's a painful death your choice

neilyoungismyhero · 29/04/2023 21:09

Believe what they tell you.

I'd watch and wait tbh and I'm sure you'll find it's just fine

However if you're at all unsure then vet

This. Monitor him and see if he is sick.

Ring them.

if they tell you it’s harmless, you’ll save a shit
load in vets fees.

if they tell you the cat needs immediate treatment, well it’ll cost you anyway, and at least your cat will be ok.

if you go to the vet without ringing them, it will cost you more than that, and chances are they’ll treat anyway as they don’t have the expertise, so will err on the side of caution.

thanks for replies. It was a tiny bit of the leaf not the bulb so I was trying to find more info on that specific situation. Anyway rang them and have been reassured it is low toxicity so no need for any action. It’s a shame the information on the internet is so alarmist and lacking in nuance with regards to the part of the plant and the amount.

My kitten once ate tulip leaves, he had a bit of diarrhea for a few days and that was it
