New kittens, need advice!

I have 2 little 8 week old kittens. They’ve not come from the best home. They stink of cigarette smoke and one has a slightly gunky eye.

Can I wash them? I regularly bathe my dog but it seems weird to wash a a cat…..

I’m phoning the vets in the morning to book their vaccinations for 9 weeks and will ask about the eye then but what’s the best thing for it in the mean time?

They’re eating well and very lively and playful. No attempts at toileting yet but they know where the little tray is (everything in one room for now) and I keep popping them in it.

Finally, any name suggestions?

Thanks.

My cat is indoor and i bath her maybe twice a year as she goes to cattery etc.
you can bath them in the sink with some cat shampoo, put the heating on and make sure you dry them a bit with a towel to help them out. My cat actually sits in the bath and does not mind it 🤣

I wouldn't wash them, no. You'll frighten them. The smell will go as they wash themselves over a period of time.

Gunky eye - wipe off gunk gently with warm water and a soft, clean cloth - vet will advise when you see them.

Names - are they girls, boys or one of each?

Personally I would ask the vet to check them over tomorrow and see what’s going on with the eyes and give them a general health check. My parents got two kittens from a similar home that vet relative sorted for them. He collected the kittens, went via work to give them a full check up and a wash and then took them onto my parents. They were some of the sweetest cats my parents have had.

They look gorgeous!

I woudn't do anything until they've seen a vet, which needs to be tomorrow, really - especially as they have gunky eyes.

Darthwazette · 27/04/2023 17:55

Hopefully our vet will see us tomorrow. The eye is open and reasonably clear but obviously don’t want it to get worse.

I forgot to say that they’re both girls.

If you ask to be seen for a kitten check as one of the kittens has a gunky eye and you want advice on how to wash them safely as they smell, I would be astonished if they didn’t fit you in as an emergency if they don’t have any standard appointments yet. if you’re quick, you might get hold of the now before they shut and are doing emergency out of Hours only.

Don't wash their bodies other than with a damp piece of kitchen roll as they will naturally clean themselves and lose cigarette smell very quickly. For the eye you should wash it with a piece of cotton wool dunked in cooled boiled water and sweep from inside of the eye to the outside of it. You can do that several times a day.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 27/04/2023 18:02

I’d get a damp flannel on them, smokes got toxins in it.

Darthwazette · 27/04/2023 18:02

I’ve spoken to a nurse at the vets and have an appointment for the morning. He’s advised to bath the eye with cooled boiled water over night to keep it clean.

If they smell of smoke like she said, i would defo give them a quick wash or they would lick it off their fur.

overitunderit · 27/04/2023 19:06

@Haveallthesongsbeenwritten you can't ingest a smell surely. A damp bit of kitchen roll or towel would be fine. The cooled boiled water like I said for the eye swept from inside to outer edge.

learieonthewildmoor · 27/04/2023 19:17

I wouldn’t wash them, maybe just a wipe with a damp cloth?

Violet and Peri(winkle), or Rose.

Buttons for one of them...
Buttons and Tuppence? Buttons and Bobbins? (would soon be Butter and Bobbie NNs in our house).

It sounds like the eye can wait for vet advice tomorrow.

My DD1 fosters kittens and has washed them if they smelled. The trick is to use warm water and to make sure the bathroom is nice and warm. Wrap them up and keep them warm as they dry.

Name suggestions - Elvira and Elfrieda.
