New cats up fighting all night

We recently lost our beautiful little boy. We decided as a family that when we were ready we would adopt again, but this time adopt a pair so they would have company/a playmate.
Whilst not actively looking for a cat we saw an appeal from our local cat rescue for 2 brothers (litter mates), that the rescue couldn't rehome as very few people want more than one cat.
We went to visit with them and it all went so well. They came home yesterday.
After the usual wandering around the house and getting used to the space, they play fought a little and played with some of the toys we have and came for cuddles. They really do have a wonderful little energy.
However, last night, they wouldn't settle at all. They were play fighting all over the place until about 3am then conked out.
I'm hopeful that they are just a bit overwhelmed by all the space and the new environment, and hopefully with play before bed time and access to toys/food/scratchers they Will settle.
They are just over a year old, any advice/reassurance.

I'll struggle to give advice without pictures 🤣.

But - while I can't promise anything, they are probably just exploring their new environment and will settle down (a bit) fairly quickly.
Will you be letting them outside in the future?

Hi @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats we will be letting them outside after 4 to 6 weeks so hopefully that will help too.

How old are they? I remember having too shut mine in the living room overnight because they rampaged the house. It didn't really stop until they were about a year and started sleeping more in general.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/04/2023 12:02

@helpfulperson they're just over 1

My 12 year old girl and the kitten aged 1 are like a herd of elephants chasing each other all over the house all night. Then there will be an outraged squeal from the big cat and even the neighbours have complained about the noise when they are charging up and down the stairs.
Don't count on it ending anytime soon.

SinisterKnitter · 27/04/2023 12:26

I only have the one and she sounds like a herd of wildebeest racing up and down the landing and stairs at night.

Now is the time to establish routines, so if you want to restrict nighttime access throughout the house at night, start now!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 27/04/2023 17:53

Sounds perfectly normal Grin

We have three - aged 8, 7 and 3 and they still chase each other around like utter idiots at 3am. They're locked downstairs at night otherwise nobody would get any sleep!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 27/04/2023 18:00

Dcat used to be up a lot at night when we first got her. Took her a while to adapt to our routine and manipulate her way into our bed🤣

Now she has 5 minutes of madness every night after I go to bed before she settles😻

Hope things settle quickly for you. And a picture would be lovely.

They're not fighting but playing. Kittens play pretty rough. My 2 are 4 now and still chase each other around and play. It's better when they can do it outside. Give them a little ball or toy to chase around too.

Allergictoironing · 27/04/2023 19:15

Luckily for me, playing pounce chase tends to end at around 11:30 - 12pm, and doesn't start up again until around 5.30am and then not every morning. This was with my 8 year old bonded siblings, and now Boycat is over the rainbow bridge Girlcat's new companion Tobias (3) is taking on his role as playmate.

It's only play, as pp have said, and may die down once they get to tire themselves out in the great outdoors.

I have 2 brothers- congratulations!! Our 2 are so lovely together. They do loads together but they do fight. It's play fighting but can get a bit noisy sometimes before it stops. It's often starts with a nap, then some grooming & cleaning each others ears etc, the descend into a play fight.

Not too much fighting in the night though. I'm sure they will settle down. But probably fight forever 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛😂

Sounds absolutely normal op they will take a few nights to settle in.
