Cat throwing up hard white stones

cheesywotsit62 · 24/04/2023 11:09

Cat vomited the other day and it looked odd, a small amount mixed with cat food but quite a few big white stones. I shrugged it off but have woken up to it again this morning. These white stones are very hard, not squishy.

It just so happens cat has the vets today anyway so good timing in that sense, I will ask the vet. But Google is bringing up nothing. Does anyone know what it could be?

She’s an elderly cat with hyperthyroidism but other than that she’s acting normal.

Very odd.
Its not bits of cat litter is it? There is a brand that’s quite bright/white.
I Can’t imagine a natural cause, is it actually food you recognise a bit? (If any is recognisable!) As in, you don’t think some nasty person is feeding a different brand with stones mixed in on purpose?

What did the vet say?

maranella · 24/04/2023 18:33

Yeah, I'd be interested in what the vet said too. Do cats get tonsil stones?

Datafan55 · 24/04/2023 19:52

I was going to say cat litter too. Shes not eating it suddenly? My old cat, when very old and a bit blind, started putting her nose in her tray (without eating but that could have started next).
Or gravel?
Humans get Pica... Do animals?

Cats can get Pica afaik, so I’d check it out asap in case she’s eating gravel or litter. What did the vet say, OP?

I had actually started another thread as my cat has been diagnosed with a ‘mass’ of some sort in her gastro intestinal region.
The vet was perplexed. The first time I found it it was on the floor, so I assumed it had come off our shoes as it didn’t look like cat sick.
This morning I found a small pile of it on the blanket on the couch - we have no children or other animals in the house. She’s also an indoor cat.
Vet very unsure - he asked a few questions but we still have no idea. Going to keep an eye on her to see if we actually witness her vomiting it.

The stones do feel like cat litter, but they are more yellow than white (we have white litter for her). The way it was on the blanket definitely looked like a vomit. I should’ve taken a photo but instead I just quickly cleaned it up! If it happens again I’ll take a picture.

She also only eats wet food so it’s not biscuits.

If the litter is absorbing stomach acid then I guess that could turn it yellow.

Ramunea · 24/04/2023 21:09

Sounds like she is eating the cat little.

the yellowing is caused by stomach acid

Maybe switch to wood based litter just in case?
