Following a sad family bereavement we have taken on a little cat. She’s just turned two and has been really nervous but is beginning to settle in. Miraculously she and our dog are getting on ok. I have never had a cat before and never thought I would but I’m actually quite in love with her already. She is an indoor cat and uses a litter tray. She had been used to wood pellets but we found them quite smelly I’m currently trying catsan non clumping litter and it’s less smelly but all the pee gets sort of mixed through it when I’m scooping out the poo. Am I doing something wrong? What cat litter do you use?

Coshida clumping cat litter from Lidl, or similar from Pets at Home. The wet stuff clumps together so you can remove it more easily. Also I use these cat litter trays (link below) that have a sieve and extra tray which I find make it easier to keep clean.

I use Catsan, too.
It needs changing every other day. The poo has to be scooped out as and when!
I also found the wood pellets rather smelly.

Vancat litter from vancat uk.

its a clumping litter. If you follow the instructions you never need to change your litter tray, just scoop the pee/poop clumps and top up the litter as required. Comes in several different aromas and all cover the smell of five indoor cats. initially it looks expensive, but for 5 cats, £50 worth of litter lasts around 6-7 weeks. It works out cheaper than the cheapest high street cat litter for us to use.

I'm using Natusan at the moment, it's really good and one bag does two trays for a month. You just scoop out the clumps, doesn't snell either, £17 a bag though!

Ultraclumping clumps the best ime, if you have a child’s bucket and spade set the spades make the best clump scoops. I never know why they persist in making them with holes normally.

@Itslookinglikeabeautifulday I like those litter trays. Dsd gave me a spare tray she had with a lid. Dcat wouldn’t use it with the lid at first but she’s getting the hang of it now. It looks nicer as it’s currently on full view in the living room.

It sounds like clumping litter is the way to go. I will get some today and give it a try.
thanks.

I’m having trouble with my settings this morning but will post a photo later.

Another vote for Natusan. It's expensive but it clumps so well that we only need to do a full change of the litter every 6 weeks or so. No smells at all. It does track like a bugger though.

Our breeder recommended vatcat but iirc when I looked into it it was clay based which I wasn't keen on for environmental reasons.

DRS1970 · 24/04/2023 09:35

With the silica based litters the wee is absorbed I to the crystals. It may look horrible, but that is how it works.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 24/04/2023 11:18

My bengal wouldn't use the crystals, too rough on his little paws.

Ever clean. I use the multiple cat but it's the best I've ever used. Ultra clumping, easy to scoop most days, no smells at all from a lidded tray and it's fine when I open it. Use as much as will go in the tray and keep it topped up to get the best out of it. About £17 on Amazon and well worth it.
